"I’ve learned that there's no one way to celebrate your culture. There's no one way to be connected to your family's history and to who you are." - SIT India alumna Disha Shah "Studying in Mexico wasn’t just an educational opportunity for me, it was more than that. I also wanted to connect more personally to the roots and heritage I was proud of but had yet to explore.” - SIT Mexico alumna Yenni Gonzalez Salinas #SITAlum Disha and Yenni of Occidental College reflect on their experiences in India and Mexico, respectively, and how their study abroad programs shaped their erspectives on their futures and themselves. Interested in nature, wildlife, and conservation? Check out our Madagascar program, Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management! Program highlights include: 🌿 Exploring the luxuriant vegetation and fauna of the Ankafobe forest 🇲🇬 Observing the island’s rare baobab, herpetofauna, and lemur species 🚶Treking the rainforest of Andasibe SIT Madagascar alumna Lucy says "I spent an incredible fall semester in Madagascar with the SIT program. I received instruction in French and Malagasy and lived with a host family just a 10 minute walk from our program center. We went on a few excursions with the school to do research and learn about different conservation experts in the area. The program culminated in independently research, where I did a biodiversity inventory study in mangrove forests up north. I left the program more confident in myself and ready for anything." Zebra encounter on our Tanzania: Wildlife Conservation and Political Ecology program 🇹🇿🦓 "This picture was taken at Ngorongoro Crater campsite. As we were pitching our tents, a herd of zebras strolled right near our campsite. It is known that many animals that are preyed on by predators tend to travel close to the campsites as there is no presence of predators. The zebras were very comfortable with people, as they would walk in between our tents throughout the night. This was an unforgettable experience that I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life." - #SITAlum Francis Lynch Our Wildlife Conservation and Political Ecology program explores the balance between ecological concerns and socioeconomic objectives in the vast wilderness expanses of northern Tanzania. The program includes over 25 nights of camping in wilderness areas to see the variety of Tanzania’s landscapes and wildlife, including lions, zebras, elephants, and a range of bird species including ostriches and Kori bustards. As you learn ecological field techniques and national park management, you’ll see how human development and population growth affect natural habitats and vice versa. Jessie participated in our Ecuador: Comparative Ecology and Conservation program in 2011, where she completed coursework in Spanish, comparative ecology, conservation, and environmental field methods. For her independent study project (ISP) Jessie researched the reproductive biology of two threatened parakeet species: the Golden-plumed Parakeet and White-breasted Parakeet. Jessie currently works at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the most prestigious institution for bird research in the world.
