Three Honor Awards | 2023 Three S+A projects received 2023 Honor Awards for Excellence in Design from AIA Miami and the NYC-based jury. Congratulations to our S+A team, project collaborators and clients! South of Fifth School "This project is one of the best we have seen among the Design Awards entries. It is fun and playful. I would love to drop my child off at this school. The Design Architect paid close attention to issues of scale and the smallest of details. Even the run of sprinkler lines, ducts, and electrical conduit seems well-coordinated. The Primary School campus has a wonderful arrangement to form a village for learning. This Project addressed many of the issues that we discussed in the Jury Panel - scale, community, sustainability and adaptive re-use. The greenest of buildings is the Adaptive Re-Use Project." BCC Engineering, LLC Lester Triana Toledo Iron Works Storia Flooring Hotel Greystone "The jury applauded this wholesale renovation of this pair of historic buildings, encompassing both large-scale interior demolition and additions, preserves the neighborhood's character. Internally, the beautifully crafted interiors harmonize seamlessly with the art deco exterior." Photo Robin Hill Hotel Greystone Salt Hotels Sérêvène shulmandesign #BowenHolly Naturalficial, Inc. Douglas Wood Associates Turner Construction Company Norberto Rosenstein Architect Inc Resilient Rehab: A Guide for Historic Buildings in Miami-Dade County "The jury commended this much needed resource for owners of historic properties that now includes resiliency planning, a priority in Florida’s ever changing extreme climate reality. The handbook is beautifully illustrated and clearly written by architects and planners, together with their community leaders for preservation and continuity of cultural heritage of Miami’s historic sites. The resiliency section offers general resilience strategies with other resources for further support. This guide is a gift to Miami’s culture as it adapts to 21st century transformation and rapid growth." Shulman + Associates Miami-Dade County

Vision for Nikki Beach Nikki Beach Redevelopment Design | 2023 Shulman + Associates and Sasaki were engaged by Nikki Beach as the design team for their proposal to retain their lease at their longtime home, 1 Ocean Drive. Rather than maxing out the property with new construction and intensive programming, the vision maintains an intimate, low-key atmosphere in line with the client’s 11 other beach clubs and 5 resorts worldwide. The Shulman/Sasaki team proposed reconfiguring and enhancing the existing facilities, cladding them in white breezeblock, while creating significant new public benefit areas and incorporating resiliency measures, both so crucial for Miami Beach. Lush gardens and resilient planting were designed for both public and private areas of the site, and dune restoration was proposed. A second option included modest additions of a new pool and public concessions building and a sculptural concrete shade canopy on the parkland side; and the transformation of the existing parking lot into a vibrant plaza. In all, the proposal by Nikki Beach represents a significant investment in the future of the site the Penrod family helped revitalize 37 years ago. The Shulman/Sasaki design concept creates value for the business and promotes responsible, sustainable redevelopment with tangible community benefit.
