  • Shook Associate Casey Douglas, who focuses his practice on class action and complex litigation and appellate law, still uses the skills he honed playing collegiate baseball at The University of Kansas today in his legal practice.   “Collegiate athletics and the legal profession have many intersecting skills and principles. Some of the most important, in my opinion, are being disciplined and dedicated while having the ability to find comfort and calm in moments of high intensity and pressure. Additionally, teamwork, time management and the ability to adapt on the fly are crucial in both athletics and the legal profession. Finally, both athletes and attorneys should remain eager to learn, develop and grow to excel in their respective fields.”   Learn more about Casey: https://lnkd.in/gv9qUjhB   **** #AthletesAtShook

  • Shook Partner Brice Nengsu Kenfack represents clients across the health, science and technology industries as part of his nationwide litigation defense practice. Before becoming a lawyer, Brice moved to the United States to play Division I basketball for Creighton University and later professionally in Europe and the Middle East. Read on to learn how Brice’s experience as a collegiate and professional athlete has shaped his approach in his legal career as part of our celebration of Shook’s athletes this week. SHOOK: How do you utilize the skills from your athletic career in your legal career? BRICE: To be successful throughout my career, it was crucial not only to maintain the skills that got me to where I was (strengths) but I also had to work hard to get better at the things I was not as good at doing (weaknesses). While this may seem cliché, this is one of the most important skills I try to utilize in my day-to-day practice. SHOOK: What principles do practicing law and training for your sport have in common? BRICE: Discipline – being a lawyer requires spending long hours working on solving complex issues. In order to do that, you cannot cut any corners. Just like in sports, staying disciplined is the only way to not fold into cutting corners. Teamwork – I played a team sport. I believe that a successful player in team sports is one who finds the way to make the game easier for his teammates, thereby his team. I believe it is the same in law. Whether you are a partner, associate, paralegal or legal administrative assistant, your success essentially depends on how easy you make the job for others on your legal team.
