Evaluating whether a decision was good or bad can often feel frustrating and demotivating. The decision scorecard is a useful tool because it focuses on evaluating specific decisions rather than the decision-maker, promoting objectivity and reducing defensiveness. This approach fosters productive, candid discussions that can lead to a better understanding of decision-making processes and improved team dynamics. #evaluation #decisionmaking #teams

Have you heard about Decision Scorecards? We came across an interesting one by psychologist Gary Klein, founder of cognitive training company ShadowBox LLC. This is what he suggests. In any review meeting or performance appraisal, evaluate not the person but the decisions they have made. He suggests listing out the major decisions for a period or related to a project and scoring them very simply. A double-check (✓✓) for the decisions that have turned out really well. A single check (✓) for good decisions. An x (x) for decisions that have turned out badly. A double x (xx) for the decisions you regret. And a question mark (?) if you aren't sure of the quality or of the decision process. During the review, discuss the decisions and what factors influenced their outcomes. What was within your control and what wasn't? Did some bad decisions turn out well due to luck or something else? Why did some good decisions fail? The crux of the Decision Scorecard is that its format keeps the focus on the decisions and not the decision maker. This helps you be more objective and open to each other's views. Leading to better conversations and outcomes. Check out this post on forming insights! Though the post focuses heavily on bias, the assessment and insights of the statistician Abraham Wald are the part that shine through. #Insights #MentalModels #SituationalAssessment

During World War II, a critical observation changed the course of aircraft armor reinforcement. The Allied forces initially planned to reinforce parts of fighter planes that were riddled with bullet holes from battles. However, statistician Abraham Wald pointed out a counterintuitive insight: it wasn't the bullet-ridden parts that needed reinforcement, but rather the areas without bullet holes. Why? Because planes hit in those "unharmed" areas never made it back. The planes we want to protect are those that did NOT return instead of those that did return. This perspective shift, considering what's missing in the data rather than what's present, was pivotal. It occurs when we focus only on the successes or survivors, missing out on the complete story. This bias can lead to skewed perceptions and misguided strategies, as we base our decisions on a partial view of reality. 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: 𝟏. 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬: Incorporate both failure and success data to get a complete picture.
