We wouldn't be who we are without our UT Residents and their neurosurgery research 🧠👏 Barrett Schwartz is a UTHSC resident from Indianapolis and has lived in Memphis for the last five years studying brain and spine trauma. He's currently conducting one of the largest research series on gunshot wounds to the head that has ever been done! This groundbreaking study focuses on how aggressive emergent surgical treatment can save lives and lead to favorable neurologic outcomes. Many centers are less aggressive, assuming poor outcomes for these patients. Barrett's work aims to change this perception, demonstrating that timely surgery to relieve brain pressure and stop bleeding, followed by continuous monitoring and medication, can significantly improve survival rates. This will be published soon. Thank you, Barrett, for your treatment research! We cannot wait to read it!

Before we swing into summer, here's a June #photodump looking back on the last days of Spring 2024 📸✌️ Last month, we celebrated our staff with a cookout, Kelly King spoke at Disrupt HR MEMPHIS, we were featured in Memphis Magazine's "Top Docs" issue, our UTHSC residents made it to the final four of the NREF, and Dr. Sonia Eden completed the Aspen Health Ideas Festival as an Aspen Fellow! But all the excitement and joy we experienced at these events paled compared to the privilege of providing world-class care for our patients! We are honored to get to do this job and serve such wonderful people 🫶

Semmes Murphey never stops innovating! 🙌 At the recent American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) conference in Chicago, Dr. Paul Park led three discussions on recent breakthroughs made for minimally invasive spine surgeries. Along with our chairman, Dr. Foley, Dr. Park is one of the world leaders in spine surgery. In particular, he shared the benefits of minimally invasive surgery on deformity corrections and the advancements in the lateral approach technique. History was just made at Semmes Murphey! 👏 Last month, Dr. Foley, assisted by spine fellow Alex Dru performed the first-ever minimally invasive spine surgery using the groundbreaking nView s1 3D imaging and navigation technology. Here's what Dr. Foley had to say 🗣 "The nView s1 system is uniquely suited for the demands of minimally invasive spine surgery. Its ability to deliver fast 3D imaging and automatic registration without having to expose the spine make it an indispensable tool for the surgical practice of the future, and it is perfectly suited for the streamlined environment of an Ambulatory Surgical Center." The success of this surgery and technology is another milestone for patient safety and rehabilitation! Learn more about this technology by clicking the link. https://lnkd.in/gwYErDwj

Tomorrow is World Brain Tumor Day, and we want to spread awareness by sharing the bravery of a survivor whose family entrusted us with his care. 💙 Landon, who lives out of state, suffered from frequent headaches. However, his mother, Traci, soon noticed they were increasing in frequency and potency, eventually inducing mild seizures. She took him to her local neurologist and a brain tumor was discovered. She was recommended to wait 6-months before surgery. She had two options, trust this diagnosis or seek a second opinion. After a few days of research, she contacted Semmes Murphey. After seeing Landon's MRI, Dr. Boop, a neurosurgeon with us at the time, recommended surgery occur immediately. It had spread from his frontal lobe to his optic nerve. New issues arose. Insurance refused to cover out-of-state surgery. Unnacceptable. We contacted St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Landon and his family were flown out and the surgery was a success. But one discovery remained. Had they waited those 6-months, the tumor would've been inoperable and Landon wouldn't have reached his 9th birthday. Landon is now a thriving young boy full of life, enjoying multiple sports. His story is one of bravery and serves as a reminder not to settle for inadequate care. Learn more about how we improve the lives of those needing neurological care by visiting the link. https://lnkd.in/e3KhEVv2
