As we are about to apply for a Newman's Own Foundation grant - we want to share two testimonials to Seeds in the Middle impact and our immense, immense, immense gratitude to #educators New York City Public Schools #teachers - No, we are not a #driveby - We are super honored that PS/IS 178 #Going for Greatness is shining in #brownsvillebrooklyn #Brownsville - it is a school of #greatness for being the only one to run a #farmstand and ensure students can #eathealthy every day and create their own solutions to #foodinsecurity. Thank you - Special thanks to Johnnymae Robinson who brought us there - and special thanks also to 2nd grader Naycher of @ps289k for sharing how we empowered her to lead a healthier life in a neighborhood swamped with junk food and few healthy options. Yes, it's #Hip2BHealthy - She says her life is brighter and she has less anger and altercations with peers since she stopped eating chips and sugary drinks... Growing Hip2B Healthy students, one school at a time
About us
Seeds in the Middle, named and founded by 4th graders, educates, empowers and inspires students, schools and their communities to create healthier places to live and learn. We teach how to grow, cook and market fresh, get fit, engage in the arts, build community and boost achievement. Youth run Hip2B Healthy Markets, where fresh juices and snacks are only 50 cents, cook nutritious, delicious meals with chefs for the same cost as a fast food combo, grow edible gardens, play Crown Heights soccer and basketball and more, do art and get tutored and more. We are powered by volunteers. We integrate entrepreneurial skills and all we do into curriculum to boost academic achievement. Our neighborhoods have the highest obesity, diabetes and heart disease rates, preventable diseases linked to malnutrition and lack of access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Youth are our change-makers. Our partners come from all walks of life. All volunteers welcome. We transform gray into green, destitution into inspiration.

Excited about our new initiatives in #coneyisland - Yes, you may enjoy the #BrooklynCyclone and the #MermaidParade and all that, but did you know Coney Island is a #fooddesert, a victim of #foodinequity #foodinjustice #foodinsecurity - We are asking Council Member Brannan and Mayor Adams to give us funds to start community-run farmstands, healthy cooking, edible gardens. Because they deserve to eat healthy too. You with us?
