Last week I had the pleasure of participating in a coral spawning workshop in collaboration with The Ocean Foundation SECORE International, Inc. Wildlife Conservation Society and The University of Havana. Reef restoration practitioners from across Cuba came together to present their work and discuss the future of coral in Cuban waters.

Reviving Reefs: Insights from Recent Restoration Workshop This week, the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) hosted a Reef Restoration Workshop on Bonaire, bringing together over 20 experts in coral reef restoration. The event featured both in-person and virtual presentations, attracting over 150 participants. Topics ranged from fish reproduction to coral outplanting, fostering knowledge sharing and collaboration in efforts to safeguard the coral reefs. (BIO) NEWS research edition. 🔊 Results of the 2023 Survey of Coral Restoration Practitioners Needs is here! In November 2023, ICRI member, and co-chair of the ICRI ad hoc committee on Reef Restoration and Adaptation, the Coral Restoration Consortium (CRC) conducted an online global survey of reef #restoration practitioners to better understand the primary issues they are facing and their most pressing learning needs. The survey received a robust set of responses from over 2️⃣ 4️⃣ 0️⃣ practitioners across 7️⃣ 0️⃣ countries. 🪸While the prevailing threats to #coralreefs globally include effects of climate change, the survey showed that issues affecting reefs at the #local level (practitioner level) vary greatly by region. This emphasises the necessity of regional #strategies and #solutions tailored to specific local challenges #ForCoral The survey also provided a list of the most pressing learning needs for practitioners. The top three learning needs identified are: 🔹 Latest Techniques: A majority (54%) of practitioners expressed a need to learn the latest techniques in coral #interventions and restoration. 🔹 Scaling Up: Almost half (49%) identified the need to learn how to #scale up restoration efforts to meet broader ecological goals. 🔹 Sexual Reproduction: Incorporating sexual #reproduction into restoration projects was highlighted by 32% of respondents as a critical learning need. The dedication of our team speaks volumes! Despite our team experiencing multiple stings from their long spines, they perservered and managed to transfer sea urchins successfully for a new experiment.✨🤗 Our Curacao-Team set out to collect Diadema antillarum (aka long-spined sea urchins). These sea urchins play a key role in promoting coral recruitment by removing algae, thereby creating spots for corals to settle and grow. They are therefore vital for coral communities to bounce back after big challenges like storms or bleaching events. Did somebody say coral babies? 🥹 With the help of SECORE International, Inc., we have been able to grow four species of corals: Symmetrical Brain Coral, Boulder Brain Coral, Mountainous Star Coral, and Boulder Star Coral! This batch of fertilized corals are about 8 months old and part of a larger effort to conserve Florida's Coral Reef. Comparing environments for larval settlement 🏡 Last week, our team placed over 450,000 brain coral larvae into 2 underwater enclosures, each filled with hundreds of star-shaped substrates designed to be suitable habitat for larvae. 🌟Settlement is an important step in the coral breeding process, and there are many factors that influence where a young coral will choose to make its forever home. The star-shaped substrates were arranged differently in each enclosure, so that we can compare their efficacy for future coral breeding efforts. Even a curious spanish hogfish (Bodianus rufus) had to come check out the settlement scene Together with our partners at Fundemar and SECORE International, Inc., we’re beyond excited to continue testing coral breeding technology, thanks to support from G20 CORDAP (Coral Research & Development Accelerator Platform).
