Recently published: an Economic Impact Assessment report, highlighting how The Scottish Cluster can significantly benefit the economy and environment. Speaking on the publication of the report, our General Manager, Nic Braley, said: “Through the lens of economic impact, industrial carbon capture and storage (CCS) emerges not only as an environmental necessity, but as a cost-effective and flexible solution that allows UK industry to remain competitive. “The Scottish Cluster brings together The Acorn Project, National Gas Transmission’s SCO2T Connect Project (a pipeline repurposing project which links the Central Belt with North-East Scotland) and a variety of industrial, power, hydrogen, bioenergy and waste-to-energy businesses, to reach a collective aim of capturing up to 10 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030 – and in doing so realising massive economic benefits for Scotland and the UK. “Our new report highlights how together these transformative projects could be a national economic success story by creating up to 10,800 development and construction jobs, 4,700 long-term, highly skilled jobs, diversifying supply chain opportunities, and supporting Scotland’s energy transition – all whilst securing the future of our energy-intensive industries, and so safeguarding further tens of thousands of jobs across the UK.” See below the progress the Cluster has made to date! Today, the Scottish Cluster has published the report “Capturing the Economic Potential: Maximising the Positive Impact of the Scottish Cluster.” It highlights how the partnership between The Acorn Project, and a variety of industrial, power, hydrogen, bioenergy and waste-to-energy businesses that make up the cluster could be a national economic success story. The Cluster will create up to 4,700 long-term, highly skilled jobs, diversify supply chain opportunities, and support Scotland’s energy transition - all whilst securing the future of our energy-intensive industries, and so safeguarding further tens of thousands of jobs across the UK. The Acorn co-venturers are pleased to confirm the appointment of Nic Braley to lead the Acorn Transport and Storage joint venture. The role will strengthen collaboration of Acorn’s multi-disciplinary team and concentrate efforts towards advancing project development. Nic Braley, who has more than 35 years’ experience in the global energy sector, was most recently Senior Vice President of Non-Operated Ventures & North Sea Electrification at Harbour Energy, one of the Acorn partners. The Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Wellbeing Economy, Fair Work and Energy, Neil Gray MSP, met with The Acorn Project development partners at Storegga’s offices in Westhill, Aberdeenshire today. NECCUS CEO Dr Philippa Parmiter chaired the session, where Scottish Cluster members INEOS, National Gas Transmission and SSE Thermal joined the Acorn partners in outlining their progress in support of Scotland’s net-zero vision. #decarbonisation #carboncaptureutilisationandstorage #ccs #theacornproject #scottishcluster

The Acorn partners welcomed Leader of The Labour Party, Keir Starmer MP; Shadow Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Ed Miliband; Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland Ian Murray MP; Scottish Labour Party Leader Anas Sarwar MSP, and spokesperson for energy, net zero, and just transition Sarah Boyack MSP to St Fergus.   Nick Cooper, chief executive of Storegga; Vice President of Shell’s UK Upstream business, Simon Roddy; Audrey Stewart, senior vice president at Harbour Energy and Sayma Cox, chief executive officer of North Sea Midstream Partners discussed Acorn’s central role in the #decarbonisation of Scottish and UK industry during the visit.   Acorn is at the heart of the Scottish Cluster, one of four in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s CCUS cluster selection process.   St Fergus is the focal point of the Acorn transport and storage system. Here, CO2 from industrial emitters in Scotland’s North East and Central Belt will arrive through reused gas pipelines, before being delivered 100km offshore to the Acorn stores some 2.5km below the North Sea bed. 

Alongside the team from The Acorn Project we've had the opportunity to engage with senior members of The Labour Party at #Lab23. NECCUS CEO Philippa Parmiter met Shadow Chancellor the Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP, and Shadow Minister for Industry and Decarbonisation Sarah Jones; while David Holman from Acorn Lead Developer Storegga and Anthony Harte from Acorn Technical Developer Shell met with Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland Ian Murray; and Shell's David Shaw met Shadow Minister for Energy Security Alan Whitehead. Labour's members found out more about the Scottish Cluster's crucial role in #decarbonising industry, on the Carbon Capture and Storage Association podium throughout the event in Liverpool.

The Acorn Project and Scottish Cluster team met Scottish Labour Party leader, Anas Sarwar MSP and The Labour Party Shadow Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband MP on the Carbon Capture and Storage Association podium at #Lab23 in Liverpool. NECCUS CEO Philippa Parmiter and SSE plc's Niall Murphy discussed the key role the Cluster and Acorn have to play in #decarbonisation in Scotland and the UK with Mr Sarwar; and Mr Miliband added his name to the CCSA's pledge in support of #CCS during his visit.
