The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) is urging companies to establish robust data systems to comply with the new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requirements. This call aims to enhance transparency and accountability in sustainability practices. I've explored the critical role of ESG data platforms in real assets in my blog post. Discover why having an ESG data platform is essential for every company with real estate:
We're excited to announce our Series A funding of $10M million led by Plural, with participation from previous investor Base10 Partners. Our customer base has already collectively planned $840 million in improvement and retrofit measures through Scaler and in 2022 reduced their carbon output by 15 million kgs - equivalent to the electricity use of over 10,000 homes a year. The investment builds on our momentum and is enabling us to accelerate our growth, expand our features and make a greater impact. Co-founder Zlatan Menkovic said: “If you want to have a global impact, there are few better places to start than the real estate industry. Investors are under pressure to decarbonise their portfolios, but to do this effectively they need data, presented and analysed in a way that helps them make the best decisions, for their clients and the world. This is exactly the problem we’re solving with Scaler and we’ve been blown away by the reaction and feedback from our customers.” Khaled Helioui, Partner at Plural, said: “Solving the real estate industry’s carbon problem is complex, when north of 60 per cent of carbon emissions in major cities come from buildings and energy use is only increasing. In only a few years, Scaler has built the most compelling software solution in the market to rapidly appraise investors’ ESG scores across their properties and outline concrete strategies to meet net zero targets. We’re excited to work with them to transform the real estate industry.”

Addressing systemic risks has been one of my key areas of focus since launching Plural and while inspiring progress is clearly felt in nature & science based approaches to durably remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and there are promising signs towards energy transition our efforts also have to include reigning on our existing emissions. One obvious area of focus is the Real Estate industry which remains one of the largest emitters of carbon in the world, building operations representing c. 37% of global emissions today, in London 78%. Regulations have significantly ramped up to increase pressure & scrutiny on reporting & transparency on remediation plans, but the infrastructure & tooling available to an already pressured industry pale in light of the challenge they have to meet. The poor data coverage & limited pervasiveness of technology add unnecessary friction for managers to comply with regulations, let alone plan effective measures to improve their footprint This is where Scaler comes in. Its software defined, modular & agile platform allows managers to effectively collect relevant data & significantly automate their ESG reporting to meet regulators standards. Managers can appraise their ESG scores across their property portfolios, determine areas of underperformance and leverage the Scaler dashboard to plan & stress tests the measures & retrofits across their portfolio to meet their net zero targets. This is the only solution in the market that had operations, not only compliance, at heart to have an effective impact on the reduction of emissions. Scaler’s customers have already collectively planned $840 million in improvement and retrofit measures while reducing their carbon output by 15 million kgs in 2022, equivalent to the electricity of over 10,000 homes. Zlatan was one of the founding members of the Uber Amsterdam team and scaled his impact across the organization as one of the best performing product managers. Luc was personally involved in the foundation of ESG reporting for the Real Estate industry as early member of the GRESB team and expanded his understanding of challenges managers were facing with his own consultancy. They are uniquely equipped to provide the tools for real estate managers to draft the plans and measures towards a transition to net zero. I am excited to lead Scaler’s $10m series A round with Plural and help the team equip the Real Estate industry to meet their net zero targets.

Data remains the cornerstone of a solid decarbonization plan. Join me, Michelle Winters and Amy Craik as we talk data collection at the Information Management Network (IMN) conference this Wednesday!
Collecting and processing asset-level data for the GRESB Spreadsheet is a challenge that #realestate managers across the global undertake each year. We're proud of how we've helped to ease the process for clients and support them in working toward higher data quality and actionable insights: ✅ Ensured correct reporting according to all of GRESB's validation rules prior to submission ✅ Automated gap analyses of data coverage at the meter level to facilitate reporting of missing data ✅ Identified reporting errors at the source of input, including third-party consumption aggregators ✅ Identified errors in manual input ✅ Automated GHG emissions accounting ✅ Streamlined collection of GRESB indicator data via custom surveys ✅ Maximized point accumulation for certifications and other Aspects ✅ Highlighted impactful discrepancies and reporting misinterpretations ✅ Curated better consumption input & monitoring for increased data quality and insights ✅ Made final GRESB Spreadsheet generation a matter of "clicking a button" ➕ and much more!
