Enjoy the long weekend! If you are ocean-side, take a moment to appreciate the role of Earth's oceans in predicting the weather on seasonal-to-subseasonal time horizons. Oceans hold the bulk of our planet's heat and water. We recommend Dr Ray Schmitt's writing on the water cycle if you need a beachside read... 🤓 🏖 🎆 https://lnkd.in/e_ZmJCSR

A recent article in the Energy Law Journal probes the topic of utility climate resilience planning and regulation. The TLDR? Improved forecasting methods can be utilized by utilities for climate change resilience planning and state commissions can mandate this type of planning. Appreciate the deep dive by Janice Beecher, Harvey Reiter, and Jeffrey Watkiss. Shoutout to Salient's forward-thinking utility customers who are doing this now -- you are demonstrating the path ahead for this sector. #forecastfurther Dive deeper: Read the full article here https://lnkd.in/ezHvRiiX And read Salient's take on this back in January 2024 here https://lnkd.in/e783yaSi

Thank you again to team Salient for diving deeper into S2S weather forecasting for smallholder farmers in East Africa last week. Excited to put your learnings to work in our next steps together with TomorrowNow.org and in-region partners. #forecastfurther Tag Rekha Sharma, Janet Lee, Karl Critz, Brian Zimmerman
After some post-workshop adventures, that’s a wrap! The Salient team, including Brian Zimmerman, Karl Critz, Janet Lee, and myself, enjoyed meeting project partners at TomorrowNow.org's workshop in Nairobi. Productive in-person conversations between FFOs, researchers, weather data providers, and tech partners moved us all towards our shared goal of connecting smallholder farmers to weather intelligence. And expertise across organizations and use cases brought clarity to the dynamic and exciting challenge to develop, as Neil Hausmann put it, “the most cutting edge technologies for the people who need them the most.” Many thanks to Brian Miranda, Philip Frost, Georgina Campbell Flatter and others for making this fantastic workshop happen. 🌱 Tag Laura Fieselman

"Our understanding of weather is changing for two reasons: Ocean data and artificial intelligence." CEO Matt Stein's TED talk explained the relationship between AI, ocean data, and weather forecasting well in layman's terms. Video coming later this summer. Chief Scientist Dr. Sam Levang's presentation at the American Meteorological Society's 2024 meeting explains the relationship in a bit more technical detail if you are curious: https://lnkd.in/eC6vEJ99 📸 credits: TEDxPortsmouth
