"In the SLAM gallery, these tickets drape over the concrete coffered ceilings like pieces of candy or jewelry, reminiscent of Rumpelstiltskin’s magical golden threads. Their beauty-queen glimmer teases viewers from a distance to take a closer look." Read more about artist Tamara Johnson's work "Tickets" on our 1 Fine Arts Blog, linked below. About us
The Saint Louis Art Museum collects, presents, interprets, and conserves works of art of the highest quality across time and cultures; educates, inspires discovery, and elevates the human spirit; preserves a legacy of artistic achievement for the people of St. Louis and the world; and engages, includes, and represents the full diversity of the St. Louis community supporting it. The Saint Louis Art Museum was founded in 1879, at the close of a decade that saw the establishment of art museums in great cities across the eastern half of the United States. What began as a collection of assorted plaster casts, electrotype reproductions, and other examples of good design in various media rapidly gave way to a great and varied collection of original works of art spanning five millennia and six continents. Today the quality and breadth of the Museum’s collection secure for it a place among the very best institutions of its kind.

In 1943, the Saint Louis Art Museum, then called the City Art Museum of St. Louis, received 256 prints, drawings, watercolors, and paintings made under the Federal Art Project, which put over 10,000 artists to work during the Great Depression. SLAM's latest exhibition, The Work of Art: The Federal Art Project, 1935–1943, showcases a selection of those works from the Museum’s collection, including some that have rarely or never before been on view. Exhibition cocurators Clare Kobasa, associate curator of prints, drawings, and photographs, and Amy Torbert, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Associate Curator of American Art, have answered questions about the free exhibition, which is on view through April 13, 2025. If Todd McClain does his job well, his work is nearly invisible. McClain is a mount maker, which means he designs and fabricates the support structures, typically made of metal, that hold art objects in place in a display. American sculptor George Thomas Brewster (1862–1943) and Italian American sculptor Orazio Piccirilli (1872–1954) created more than 20 limestone portraits at the request of architect Cass Gilbert to adorn the upper exterior of the Palace of Fine Arts for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition. Portraying architects, painters, and sculptors, 22 limestone medallions line the Museum’s east, west, and north facades. Four prints from the Saint Louis Art Museum’s collection were added to the travelling exhibition Art and Imagination in Spanish America, 1500–1800: Highlights from LACMA’s Collection, on view through September 1. When SLAM curators were preparing for the exhibition’s arrival, they were pleasantly surprised to discover related prints in the Museum’s collection. Art of the 1960s was defined by a wide range of artistic expression. With bold colors and geometric patterns, artists of the period subversively challenged the conventional function and form of art. A new installation in the Museum’s contemporary galleries highlights the innovative art movements in the 1960s, with a particular focus on Minimalism and Op Art. Learn more about this installation on our latest 1 Fine Arts Blog post at the link below.] https://lnkd.in/evJ8H_CX
