The last color of the #PrideFlag 🏳️🌈 is black, which represents diversity. 🖤   As we begin to close out #PrideMonth, our final spotlight is Bayard Rustin (1912–1987), an American political activist and prominent leader in the Civil Rights and #LGBTQ+ Rights movements.   In the 1980s, Bayard became a part of the LGBTQ+ movement and a powerful advocate for AIDS education. 🤎 Brown on the #PrideFlag 🏳️🌈 represents inclusivity.   Today, we’re honoring Marsha P. Johnson (1945-1992), who was an outspoken LGBTQ+ rights activist for transgender people of color, like herself.    Marsha found joy as a drag queen in Greenwich Village—an LGBTQ+ hub in New York City. She was a key figure in the 1969 Stonewall Riots and worked alongside Sylvia Rivera to establish Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), a group committed to helping transgender youth in New York City.   In the 1980s, Johnson’s activism extended to the AIDS epidemic when she joined Act Up, a prominent organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with AIDS. ❤️ Red represents Love & Life in the #PrideFlag. 🏳️🌈   Today, we’re spotlighting Barbara Gittings (1932-2007), who is widely regarded as the mother of the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement.    In 1958, Barbara started the New York chapter of Daughters of Bilitis (DOB), the first lesbian civil rights organization in the U.S.    Barbara, along with fellow organizer Frank Kameny, waged a multi-year campaign for the declassification of homosexuality as a mental disorder. The next color of the #PrideFlag 🏳️🌈 is orange, which represents healing. 🧡 Today, we’re recognizing Sylvia Rivera (1951–2002), a trans Latina who fought against gender identity discrimination and bravely took part in the Stonewall Riots at only 17 years old.    Throughout her life, she advocated for transgender people—especially transgender people of color—within the larger movement for gay rights. Alongside Marsha P. Johnson, she started the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR)—a group responsible for tackling issues facing the transgender community in New York City.    To learn more about her life and legacy, search Sylvia Rivera at womeshistory.org

The next color of the #PrideFlag 🏳️🌈 is yellow, which represents sunlight. 💛   We're continuing to celebrate #PrideMonth with our next spotlight: Stormé DeLarverie (1920–2014), a lifelong gay rights activist and drag performer.    Her legacy is largely centered around her participation in the Stonewall Uprising in New York City in 1969, where it is believed to have been Stormé who threw the first punch. Her bravery—along with those who joined her—helped to catalyze the #LGBTQ+ rights movement as we know it today. Today, our offices are closed to honor #Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the final emancipation of enslaved Americans, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Across the country, Black communities gathered in public meeting places banned during slavery, celebrating their freedom and their future, ready to claim their rightful place as citizens. Becoming a Federal holiday in 2021, we are using the day to keep reflecting on this historic moment—and what we can learn from it—by embracing the diversity and creativity that drive us forward. As an agency that fully embraces the knowledge that our differences are our strength, we strive to support each other, continuously fostering an inclusive environment where every voice is valued. Because the only way to keep moving towards a brighter, more equitable future, is to keep moving together.
