🌍🌱 Today is #WorldMangroveDay! Did you know mangroves can store 4x more carbon than tropical forests? Through USAID's Sustainable Interventions for Biodiversity, Oceans, and Landscapes (SIBOL) project, we proudly support efforts to grow and manage mangroves in the Philippines. By working with local partners and communities, we help protect biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience, and support local fishers. 🐟🤝 Read this new USAID Medium blog to learn more ⬇️  https://lnkd.in/eGJZVq-Z

🌍 New Policy Brief! 🌱 We're excited to share a new policy brief focused on building sustainable and efficient #FoodSystems that address both #Nutrition and #Climate challenges. 📄 "Food Systems and Food Security: Connecting the Dots for Achieving Sufficiency of Healthy and Sustainable Foods," led by the Institute for Policy, Advocacy, and Governance and co-authored by RTI International’s Tracy Mitchell in collaboration with experts from UNICEF, the Indonesia Fertilizer Research Institute, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and Rodale Institute. Key insights: 📌 The ‘Smart Food’ concept is a viable pathway that harmonizes nutritional needs, environmental stewardship, and economic feasibility to strengthen resilient and sustainable food systems. 📌 Improving access to technology and digital platforms can enable farmers to produce sustainable foods and improve consumer awareness of food sustainability. 📌 School feeding initiatives are a cost-effective and high-impact approach to reducing malnutrition and improving access to healthy diets for children. The #G7 can play a pivotal role in championing climate-resilient agriculture and innovative food technologies. 📈 A working meeting was held at the premises of the National Electricity Market Operator (MEMO) with representatives from USAID and the Connect for Growth (C4G) project. 📍 The meeting discussed MEMO activities supported by USAID within the regional project - Energy bridge and Connect for growth-C4G, which aims to achieve market coupling of the power exchanges between Greece, North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Albania in order to access the single European electricity market. ✅ The contribution of MEMO in the implementation of the project and the efforts for the successful realization of market coupling were emphasized. By the end of 2026, we expect market coupling with an EU member state. #MEMO #marketcoupling #electricity #trading

We are incredibly proud to share the inspiring journey of Olympic swimmer Jesse Ssengonzi, who is honoring his late father, Robert Ssengonzi, by competing for Uganda at the Paris Olympics. Robert dedicated over 15 years of his professional life to RTI International, serving as a senior research health specialist and director of the Africa Integrated Health program from 2000-2011 and later returning as the senior director of HIV and leader of RTI’s cross-institute xHIV team. Robert's commitment to improving health outcomes in Africa and beyond continues to inspire us all. We wish Jesse the best of luck as he carries forward his father's legacy of dedication and excellence. Join us in cheering for Jesse as he makes waves at the Paris Olympics! 🌟🏊♂️ https://lnkd.in/eJfzjB_p #Olympics #Paris2024 #Legacy #Health #Excellence #HIVResearch

RTI is heartbroken by the passing of our colleague Liana Gertsch. Liana’s dedication to international development, her many contributions over decades, and her memory will always stay with us as we continue in her footsteps.

A final goodbye to our beloved colleague, Liana Gertsch On July 2, 2024, I received devastating news that our dear colleague at RTI, Liana Gertsch, passed away while on assignment as the Chief of Party (COP) of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Transforming the Education System for Teachers and Students in Liberia (TESTS) Activity. Liana joined RTI International in 2019 as the COP for the USAID-funded Okuu Keremet! (Learning is Awesome) education project in Kyrgyzstan. Since then, I spoke with Liana almost weekly and we became friends over time. Her kind and generous spirit was of the likes that we only wish to be honored to know. Liana knew how to look at the big picture while not missing a single detail, and even during the most difficult times she would focus on the positive sides of everything. Liana was a dream colleague and was known for her professionalism, friendliness, humor, and passion for many things including cultures, languages, and always helping others. She was a trusted leader, expert, and mentor, helping her teams achieve meaningful impact and improve lives in the countries and communities where they work. Above all, she spoke of her three children all the time, with a great smile and so much pride. My heart breaks for them and I wish them peace and strength during this difficult time, and most importantly, to know that their mother was one of kind. Liana’s passion, hard work, and big heart left an ever-lasting impact on me. Liana, I will miss you beyond measure. Thank you for everything that you taught me. You have done well, and your legacy lives on. Now rest and know that you are loved.

At the Bounkiling health center, located 50 km (30 miles) from Sédhiou, Senegal, the lack of running water had been a significant challenge. For up to 4 months at a time, the center was without water due to a broken borehole. The burden fell on patients' families to bring water for treatment, making infection prevention and control a constant struggle.  Thanks to the USAID-funded Owod project, implemented by RTI International, a new borehole constructed by the local Health Development Committee is now providing relief to over 23,000 patients and 52 staff members. With clean premises and well-maintained facilities, the center can now offer quality care with renewed motivation.  "Thanks to the borehole, we can smile again and are now equipped to offer quality care to the population. Our premises are clean, with well-maintained toilets, which improves our motivation on a daily basis," says Dr. Bou Diarra, the district's chief medical officer.  Learn more about the USAID Owod project and our efforts to improve healthcare access: https://lnkd.in/eMDsuykf
