RLPS U: LIVING WITH BRAIN CHANGE Thank you to RLPSers Debbie Kimmet and Jeff Dagen for sharing with out staff not only what they learned while attending a Teepa Snow, MS, OTR/L, FAOTA Positive Approach to Care workshop, but also their personal experiences with memory changes in their families. We design spaces for people with brain changes, so focusing on what the people living with these changes, as well as their families and care partners, really want helps us develop meaningful and respectful design strategies. You'll notice this session was about 'Brain Change' not 'Alzheimer's' or 'Memory Loss'. Jeff shared that "Teepa helped us understand that words matter and we want to make sure that we have words that respect human dignity, that it is important to respect where people are in this process. Not what they've lost; but what remains." This overarching theme of meeting people where they are hit home with Deb. She said "I think one of the most powerful things I learned is to no longer have that "oh no" response but more like an "oh, ok!" now you know what to do." If you find this topic interesting, we'll include YouTube links to a few of the documentaries they shared in the comments.

In my experience, individuals tend to overlook accessibility considerations until they or a close family member personally requires it. At that point, addressing accessibility challenges may become significantly more challenging. Thanks to City & State PA and AIA Pennsylvania for allowing me to talk about the perceived stigma of accessibility features (when you don't need them) and how architects and designers can creatively include them without calling attention to them. https://lnkd.in/dp4Vfehe #AccessibleEnvrionments #SeniorLiving #rlpsArchitects #Architecture #InteriorDesign

At today's RLPS University staff lunch, our 2024 Summer Interns presented the annual Intern Showcase. As they practiced presenting, we got to know each student better. They covered a bit about themselves and their educational paths including studio projects (everything from first-year drafting through a grad school thesis), study abroad trips, family pets, sports, and volunteering. Our newest interior design team member, Allison Merckx, joined in as well since she recently completed her bachelor's degree. Thanks to each of you for all the work you put into this. l to r: Morgan Robertson, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology; Seth Wienholt, Penn State University; Alex Wolf, Virginia Tech; Allison Merckx, B.I.A, Marywood University graduate Remote presenters: (l) Elizabeth Laman, Assoc. AIA, Carnegie Mellon University and (r) Julia Briner, Virginia Tech

Meet Ellie Strickler, the newest Construction Administrator at RLPS. Ellie holds a bachelor's degree in business management but has always worked in the construction and development industry, and is looking forward to contributing her resourceful skills in her new role. She lives in Elizabethtown with her husband, Rob, two children—Cora (10) and Sam (8)—and their neurotic Australian Labradoodle, Muzz. When not at work, Ellie enjoys renovating their 1960s home and exploring other creative endeavors. Welcome, Ellie! We are grateful to have you on the team!
