  • It's a new week and we have a new installment on behalf of Internet Safety Month 💻 We are chatting about red flags 🚩 and what you should do if you suspect your child has been "Sextorted" ⬇️ 🚩 Receiving gifts through the mail, such as cell phones, gift cards, and webcams. 🚩 Calling unknown numbers. 🚩 Rejecting family and friends in favor of spending time online. 🚩 Getting upset when he or she can’t get online. 🚩 Minimizing the screen or turning off the monitor when you come into the room. 🛑 Although not any single one of these red flags are cause to assume your child is being sextorted, it IS cause for an open and honest conversation with your child about how they are interacting online. 🙎 Remind your child it is not their fault! Some people are so good at manipulating teens that sometimes the teens don’t even realize they’ve been tricked. 🕵️ Help them identify two or three other trusted adults they can talk to if they do not feel comfortable talking to you. 📵 Establish electronic rules: time allowed, free electronics zones (bedroom), free electronic times (dinner, family activities). 📲 Learn how to set up privacy settings and how to report inappropriate content. 🥰 If your child suspects a friend or family member is experiencing Sextortion, encourage them to talk to a trusted adult, to not share the photo or video any further, and not comply with any blackmailing demand. Talk to them about being an "upstander" and not a "bystander" in this situation - don't share a photo further and say something if someone else DOES share it! 💙 Most importantly have open, respectful, and meaningful communication with your child. #InternetSafetyMonth #InternetSafety #KidsInternetSafety #NCMEC

  • WE HAVE A 2-PEAT 🥳 Congratulations to the May 2024 Employee of the Month, Matthew Nelson, for being the Richland Police Department's first two-time awardee. Sergeant Hyrum Stohel of the Street Crimes Unit and WA Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce noted that Detective Nelson continuously exemplifies strength and resilience when it comes to his work with our Southeast Regional Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (SER-ICAC TF) and the Tri-Cities Regional SWAT team. He is a wonderful example of hard work and dedication to the job - constantly regarded by his peers as a team player and valuable asset. Bravo, Detective Nelson, and congrats again👏 (Detective Matt Nelson, pictured on the right, SCU/ICAC Sergeant Hyrum Stohel pictured on the left) #EmployeeofheMonth #RPDEmployeeoftheMonth #Congrats #LawEnforcement

  • SEE A PROBLEM - SOLVE A PROBLEM 🧐 On June 12, 2024, around 2PM, the Richland Police Department responded to assist the Richland Fire & Emergency Services on a shed fire. #RFD did their normal, AMAZING work, but a construction company stepped up and did, as well 🚛 We applaud these local heroes for seeing a problem and finding a solution, even when they didn't "need" to 👏 #CommunityHeros #RichlandFire #RichlandPolice #RPD #FunInTheField #ThankYou

  • In our second installment of "Internet Safety Month".... 🧐💻 We are going to chat about "Sextortion" and what a parent should know about this scary truth ⬇️ ➡ Disclaimer - we know these topics are HARD, but that is why we need to be open and honest about them. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children calls this issue "The Hidden Pandemic" for one in seven children, online. ➡ What is it? It is a type of blackmail used by offenders to acquire additional sexual content from a child, coerce a child into engaging in sexual activity, or obtain money from a child. ➡ How could this happen? Children can sometimes become victims of sextortion after sexting with someone they thought they knew and trusted. Still, NCMEC analysis has found that children who are victims of sextortion are often targeted and blackmailed by an individual they met online. 📩 In 2023, the CyberTipline received 186,819 reports of online enticement, the category that includes sextortion. 📊 Between 2021 and 2023, the number of online enticement reports increased by 323%. 🤍 78% of the reports involved female children and 15% involved male children (In 8% of reports, child gender could not be determined). 👧 Male and female children each ranged in age from 8-17 years old and had an average age of fifteen years old. 🕵️♀️ In 24% of the reports, reporters mentioned that they suspected or knew that additional children were targeted by the same offender. 💡 For more information on Sextortion and resources available to parents and children alike, please visit ⬇️ ⌨️ https://lnkd.in/g4cm4SDP 📑 You can download THIS report for an online fact sheet, as well: https://lnkd.in/gZXehK6F 📵To learn how to have your nudes removed from the internet, visit: takeitdown.ncmec.org. 📅 We will talk red flags 🚩 and what to do if you discover your child has fallen victim to this type of extortion, next week... #InternetSafetyMonth #InternetSafetyforChildren #NCMEC #sextortion
