It's a new week and we have a new installment on behalf of Internet Safety Month 💻 We are chatting about red flags 🚩 and what you should do if you suspect your child has been "Sextorted" ⬇️ 🚩 Receiving gifts through the mail, such as cell phones, gift cards, and webcams. 🚩 Calling unknown numbers. 🚩 Rejecting family and friends in favor of spending time online. 🚩 Getting upset when he or she can’t get online. 🚩 Minimizing the screen or turning off the monitor when you come into the room. 🛑 Although not any single one of these red flags are cause to assume your child is being sextorted, it IS cause for an open and honest conversation with your child about how they are interacting online. 🙎 Remind your child it is not their fault! Some people are so good at manipulating teens that sometimes the teens don’t even realize they’ve been tricked. 🕵️ Help them identify two or three other trusted adults they can talk to if they do not feel comfortable talking to you. 📵 Establish electronic rules: time allowed, free electronics zones (bedroom), free electronic times (dinner, family activities). 📲 Learn how to set up privacy settings and how to report inappropriate content. 🥰 If your child suspects a friend or family member is experiencing Sextortion, encourage them to talk to a trusted adult, to not share the photo or video any further, and not comply with any blackmailing demand. Talk to them about being an "upstander" and not a "bystander" in this situation - don't share a photo further and say something if someone else DOES share it! 💙 Most importantly have open, respectful, and meaningful communication with your child. #InternetSafetyMonth #InternetSafety #KidsInternetSafety #NCMEC
