Last week, the California Coastal Commission awarded it's 1,000th Whale Tail Grant. Paddle for Peace will receive $50,000 to support its water sports, science and conservation programs to increase access for people of color. This program serves as a great reminder that the California coast belongs to all of us, regardless of zip code, thanks the Coastal Act, the Coastal Commission, and equity-centered groups like Paddle for Peace! 🌊

Juneteenth—also known as Jubilee Day—commemorates the emancipation of African American slaves. While we celebrate this monumental day for our African American relations, we also acknowledge that today was NOT the day that ALL slaves were freed. A term generally used to describe formerly enslaved people, Freedmen, also refers to descendants of people enslaved by Indigenous people or descendants of formerly enslaved people who lived among Indigenous people. Their liberation was delayed until the Treaties of 1866, a full year after Juneteenth. As a national organization, Native Americans in Philanthropy represents a wide range of Indigenous peoples, cultures, and identities, including our Freedmen relatives. We recognize that our Black Native and Afro-Indigenous relatives must simultaneously bear the weight of a shared, painful, and complex heritage, while also battling against the intersectional layers of oppression and underrepresentation. There is no undoing the many traumas experienced by the Freedmen, Black Native, and Afro-Indigenous communities, but we can come together to understand, address, and take the journey of healing. We are thrilled to announce a historic milestone in conservation and co-stewardship! Today, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla, Representative @Mike Thompson, the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, Kletsel Dehe Wintun Nation, and the Bureau of Land Management celebrated the expansion of the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. This landmark event includes a historic co-stewardship agreement to protect the sacred land now known as Molok Luyuk. This Presidential proclamation not only renames the “Walker Ridge” parcel to “Molok Luyuk” but also adds over 13,000 acres of federal public land to the Monument. This ensures the preservation of rich biodiversity, wildlife corridors, and tribal origin stories. Senator Padilla emphasized, "We’re setting a new standard of cooperative stewardship and embarking on a new era of public land management that gives tribes a seat at the table." This is a significant step towards inclusive and sustainable land management.
