#ICYMI: The California Tahoe Conservancy awarded a $220,000 grant to help fund the creation of a new Lake Tahoe Basin liaison position for the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California. Including all voices is key to #conservation. This grant for a Washoe Tribe Tahoe Basin liaison ensures meaningful #Tribal participation in land management decisions!
At its meeting last week, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board awarded a $220,000 grant to help fund the creation of a new Lake Tahoe Basin liaison position for the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California. The Washoe Tribal Liaison position will help ensure meaningful Tribal participation in Basin land management decisions and actions. The Conservancy is joining a coalition of funders who have collaborated to establish this position. https://lnkd.in/g6DBBavP The Wá∙šiw (Washoe) are a sovereign tribal nation who are the original inhabitants of DáɁaw Ɂága (Lake Tahoe) and its surrounding areas. Lake Tahoe is the Tribe’s most sacred place, and they consider it a living entity that needs to be honored and protected. Now, The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, a formally recognized tribal government, has secured the funding it needs to establish a full-time Community Liaison. This liaison will represent its voice at community meetings and decision-making tables for the next three years. https://lnkd.in/gSjJqyyp

We’re helping achieve The White House America the Beautiful Freshwater Challenge to protect, restore, and reconnect 8 million acres of #wetlands and 100,000 miles of our nation's rivers and streams by 2030. 💧 Here are 3 examples of how California is making a splash: Earlier this month, CDFW partnered with the Tule River Tribe to release a family of seven beavers in the South Tule River watershed as part of a multi-year beaver reintroduction effort. These busy architects construct dams that hold water, keeping it available during dry seasons, boosting summer flows, and even improving the Tribe's drinking water supply. Governor Newsom announced the return of over 2,800 acres of ancestral lands to the Shasta Indian Nation, supporting the Tribe's future stewardship of the land and water. In 2023, the Nature Conservancy received a $2.75 million grant from the Wildlife Conservation Board to protect a 398 acres of vital salmon habitat in French Creek, a tributary of the Klamath River. By securing the land and improving streamflow, this project will help safeguard salmon populations as the Klamath River undergoes its historic dam removal.
