Construction continues on the Cipriani Ocean Resort, Club Residences and Casino in Punta del Este, Uruguay.    Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, the new complex features a faithful recreation of the iconic Tudor-style San Rafael Hotel, which famously launched the beachside community into the destination it is today, as well as three residential towers – ranging from 30 to 60 stories tall – a conference center, two restaurants, a spa, beach club, outdoor pool, and many other renowned Cipriani amenities and services.   Learn more about this project: www.ciprianipunta.com

Rafael Viñoly Architects Partner, Román Viñoly recently gave Wallpaper* magazine writer Léa Teuscher an exclusive first look inside The Greenwich, a 912-foot tall residential tower located in downtown New York City. Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, the building's uniquely graceful form is composed of two sculpted prisms suspended from monumental I-beam cores – a direct expression of its structure. The design creates a collection of panoramic residences that elevate the human experience in a building that celebrates its unique location in one of the greatest cities in the world. We are honored to announce The Tokyo International Forum is the winner of two prestigious awards: the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Twenty-Five Year Award and the Japan Institute of Architects (JIA) Twenty-five Year Award, respectively. Both architecture prizes are awarded to buildings that have set a precedent for the last 25 to 35 years and continue to set standards of excellence for their architectural design and significance. Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, The Forum is a groundbreaking exhibition and conference center in Tokyo, Japan. It is recognized for its innovative architectural design, which features a striking glass atrium and multi-purpose hall, exemplifying structural transparency and public engagement. The complex includes seven performing arts and multipurpose halls, an exhibition hall, and 34 different meeting rooms that accommodate various performances and other events. The Forum became a beloved landmark shortly after construction was completed in 1996 because of its ability to communicate the cosmopolitan nature of Tokyo to the world through its architecture. While it continues to contribute greatly to daily life in the city, the Forum has also supported Japan through unexpected traumas, including providing shelter for residents who were stranded after the 2011 earthquake. It has welcomed more than 23 million visitors and hosted more than 3,400 events. Thank you to the jurors of the AIA and JIA for the esteemed recognition, and congratulations to the entire project team! More information: https://shorturl.at/uDRc7

Rafael Viñoly Architects revealed designs for a new master-planned mixed-use community in Midtown Toronto, the firm’s first project in Canada. Developed by Madison Group, the nearly two million square foot community will feature four towers, an amphitheater, extensive landscaped open space, an adventure playground, and new retail opportunities with cafe and patio space. The groundbreaking development will not only redefine Midtown but also provide the entire community, including residents and local businesses, with unparalleled access to an enriched public domain. "We are privileged that our first project in Canada should be so transformative and focused on contributing to Toronto’s public realm. Throughout our more than four decades of practice, guided by our founder Rafael Viñoly, we have approached each new engagement with the conviction that every significant investment in the built environment is a ‘civic project’ by default, regardless of use or source of funding.  Buildings in dense environments are so capital intensive, unignorable, and enduring that they inevitably impact the lives of every individual in their host communities. Our design ethos is thus rooted in leveraging these enormous commitments of time, capital and passion, to create spaces that inspire and connect people.” Román Viñoly, Partner at Rafael Viñoly Architects.  Find out more: https://shorturl.at/doQZ1

Tomorrow, March 28, Rafael Viñoly Architects’ Jac Selinsky will participate in a webinar on how a building project’s glazing options are impacted by the flow of design, specification, supply chain and installation requirements. Sponsored by Guardian Glass and organized by Architectural Record and the Glass in Architecture Academy, the webinar will center on the vision and planning behind the Rafael Viñoly Architects-designed, Amaris, a residential building at The Wharf, a 3.5 million square foot, mixed-use waterfront neighborhood along the Potomac River in Washington D.C. Amaris’ distinctive curvilinear form features a sweeping curtain wall of flat glass and cold bent glass that maximizes views, and allows daylight deep within each residential unit. Médano El Pinar – the last project designed by architect Rafael Viñoly – is an innovative, ultra-sustainable, luxury, multi-family residential development that is sited just 15 minutes outside of Montevideo, Uruguay, on the only property in “Greater Montevideo” that is not separated from the beach by a road. The unique oceanfront location sits just behind the dunes on the edge of a low-rise residential neighborhood. The building’s long, low-slung, and sinewy shape integrates it with the organic landscape of its pristine setting to minimize its visual impact on the neighborhood and make it completely invisible from the public beach. Currently under construction in Jersey City, New Jersey, the Rafael Viñoly Architects-designed Honorable Frank J. Guarini Justice Complex’s main five-story courthouse structure is characterized by a steel frame, reinforced with a concrete slab and steel beams. For the ground, second, and third floors, the load is supported by steel columns extending down to the foundation. In contrast, the fourth and fifth floors, along with the roof, feature a similar floor system but are suspended from a network of 15 "top hat" trusses spanning 85 feet. These trusses are hung from a pair of primary multi-story trusses located at the north and south sides of the building, each spanning an impressive 700 feet and engineered to withstand disasters. The absence of continuous steel framing supports between the third and fourth floors creates expansive and column-free courtrooms on the third floor. Rafael Viñoly Architects’ design for a new international airport terminal at the Aeroporto Amerigo Vespucci in Florence, Italy, creates a sense of place and improves the passenger experience. Airports are often confusing places to move through and lack an experiential point of focus because of the way the Arrivals and Departures areas are usually arranged – either next to each other or vertically stacked. By placing Arrivals and Departures facing each other across a large public space – a “Piazza” at the center of the new terminal – the scheme organizes all the circulation into and out of the terminal and the access to mass transit, parking and retail that serves the local community as well as travelers. This arrangement creates a passenger flow model that is always very clear because passengers can maintain a visual connection to where they are going. More information: https://shorturl.at/qswC6
