"Never underestimate the influence of a great mentor." Roxane Battle #mentoringmatters https://lnkd.in/dcFh5_Mp
There are #legends and then there’s Don Shelby. If you’ve spent anytime in Minnesota, you know the name. I’ve known Don since I was a wide-eyed college student studying journalism at the University of Minnesota. As luck would have it, I applied for and won a broadcasting scholarship which, in addition to paying for my last two years of school, also provided a summer internship inside the WCCO | CBS News Minnesota news room, where Don held sway as main anchor. He immediately took me under his wing, doling out career advice and from time to time buying me lunch or lending me a twenty so I could eat. I parlayed the internship into a job on the assignment desk as a dispatcher, a lowly not-so-glamourous tv job which entailed listening to emergency scanners for spot news. I spent many overnight hours in the dispatch “shack” as we called it, learning the ins and outs of breaking news, until I won another scholarship and enrolled in the University of Missouri-Columbia graduate j-school program. Don encouraged me every step of the way, and a few years later, after a couple of small-market reporting stints in Jacksonville and Kansas City, I landed a news anchor job back in Minneapolis at KARE 11. Don was the first one to call and congratulate me. Throughout decades of time and distance, and eventual exits from the world of television news, I’m still so very grateful for his tutelage. I told him as much last night when we saw each other at a fundraising event he’s championing. (You’ll be hearing more about that soon). Never underestimate the influence of a great #mentor. Here’s to one of the good guys…still. #mentorship #mentor #mentee #careerdevelopment #journalism #televisionnews #media #broadcasting

We are pleased to feature Vikas Narula and Keyhubs inspiring entrepreneurial career story in our book "Protégé Power: A Roadmap to Mentorship"! For the past 15 years at Keyhubs we have mapped human networks, revealing the people who spark trusted, transformative relationships in organizations. Now we are stretching our focus to also include the people who are on the outskirts of these kinds of work relationships, finding ways to bring more inclusion and belonging. Read more about how we've reimagined our work, and are reimagining workplace culture, in this month’s newsletter. Then we invite you to think about your workplace. Where do you see yourself — in the inner circle? second ring? outside looking in? And where do you see your team members? Creating inclusion and belonging is a series of small, simple steps. Starting a conversation with someone standing alone at an event. Asking someone who has been quiet during a meeting if they would like to add something. Having a conversation with your team about what belonging looks like at work. As Nyia Harris said so well at our Keyhubs Online Gathering this month, "Lead with connection." It's a mindset we embrace and celebrate seeing in so many of our friends and fans! We are pleased to feature Kenya McKnight Ahad's early career story in our book "Protégé Power: A Roadmap to Mentorship" and are forever grateful she took the time to share it with us! #mentoringmatters #careersuccess #cupofcourage #mentoringwisdom Lori Crever #MentorOn2024 https://lnkd.in/gAjH9NZk
Kenya McKnight Ahad, owner of the ZaRah Wellness Center and CEO of the Black Women's Wealth Alliance, has been named MEDA's Community Builder of the Year. In 2018, Kenya envisioned ZaRah as a space to extend naturopathic services to Black women. The events of 2020, including the pandemic and George Floyd's murder, underscored the urgent need for cultural and economic healing. Growing up in North Minneapolis, Kenya recognized the importance of creating a safe, healing environment in her community. In 2021, she became the first Black owner of the historic building at 1200 West Broadway. The ZaRah Wellness Center offers a range of services, including a salt room, meditation spaces, an apothecary, and massage therapy, promoting wellness and economic empowerment for Black women.
