A national coalition strengthening communities by reinvigorating local news
About us
Press Forward is a historic initiative to strengthen democracy in the United States by revitalizing local news and information. The steady and significant decline in the availability of reliable, fact-based local news across the country is connected to growing threats to democracy, increasing polarization, and the spread of disinformation. At the same time, over a decade of investment in journalism experimentation and transformation have produced new models and solutions that are ready to scale, and a new generation of leaders prepared to reinvent and revitalize the field. It’s time to move from individual grantmaking strategies to a shared vision and coordinated action. Press Forward is a national coalition investing more than $500 million to strengthen local newsrooms, close longstanding gaps in journalism coverage, advance public policy that expands access to local news, and to scale the infrastructure the sector needs to thrive. When local news disappears, we become even more divided in our lives and opinions, research shows. The impact on our civic health is staggering, and it's one of the reasons a group of funders founded Press Forward. Learn more about Press Forward, and the New Mexico Chapter, in this interview with our Associate Director Christina Shih and Rashad Mahmood of the New Mexico Local News Fund, hosted by Gwyneth Doland of KNME-TV, New Mexico PBS: https://bit.ly/467AWO6

The university is both teaching students to alleviate news deserts - and working with other schools to replicate the model. Congrats to the University of Vermont's Center for Community News on new investments from MacArthur Foundation & Knight Foundation. #PressForward
This story was one of the most #encouraging projects I've gotten to tackle in a while. Deploying #StudentJournalists to Help Local ‘#NewsDeserts’ The University of Vermont's Center for Community News recently received a #donation of more than $5 million from the Knight Foundation and MacArthur Foundation, members of the Press Forward Initiative. The gift reflects a growing push to re-energize #localnews coverage in underserved regions by leveraging experiential #learning programs at colleges and universities across the country. “It’s a triple win,” said Richard Watts, founder and executive director of the CCN. “It’s good for the students to have real stories that are published. It’s good for the universities, because many of us have a public service mission to give back. And it’s good for local news, the media ecosystem, which has really collapsed.” Also, it's always a pleasure to connect with fellow Missouri School of Journalism alumni, and this story had two! A big thank you to rural media and news desert scholars, Nick Mathews and Teri Finneman.

In Mississippi, university students will operate a “What is True” hotline, website and podcast, to help Mississippians separate facts from hearsay. Residents will have the opportunity to call in with questions about a claim they’ve seen, and students will fact-check that information. It’s one of the ways local news initiatives are meeting information needs in rural areas. Here’s more about four such efforts that have received funding from the MacArthur Foundation and Scripps Howard Fund, as part of Press Forward’s Aligned Grantmaking. - with 100 Days in Appalachia, Mississippi Free Press, Buffalo's Fire and the The University of Southern Mississippi. #PressForward https://lnkd.in/dmqV2q4F

Honored to take part in this important discussion about the challenges and opportunities facing local news in New Mexico, and what we at the New Mexico Local News Fund are doing to tackle it. Grateful for our national partners like Press Forward, Democracy Fund and local ones like THORNBURG FOUNDATION, McCune Charitable Foundation, our individual donors, and so many others. Here's the discussion: https://lnkd.in/gBSm58xJ On the same show there were also great discussions about news ownership in NM featuring Patrick Davis and Rich Connor on their new media ventures. https://lnkd.in/geiM4K5G And about some of the hard hitting investigative reporting going on from Searchlight New Mexico: https://lnkd.in/gShnwE4c
