Optimism is a leadership superpower: it turns challenges into opportunities, supports adaptive and nimble strategy, and keeps teams engaged and motivated. Learn more about how to harness the power of optimism below. Thanks Association of Executive Search and Leadership Consultants (AESC) for including Cleveland Justis, MBA, PhD's perspective in this article! From Cleveland Justis, MBA, PhD: "Leaders are often moving against the well-worn paths of people who are used to working in their own self-reinforcing silos, unable to see how the world could be any different,” said Cleveland Justis, Founder & CEO, Potrero Group. "Those with optimism—leaders who perceive opportunities rather than obstacles—are able to show them otherwise. In our experience, optimistic leaders are strivers. They create space for innovation and change, which keeps organizations from stagnating and losing relevance and effectiveness."

At Potrero Group, we believe in continuous learning and the power of community and collaboration. Associate Search Consultant, Sherifa Holder, recently attended the PGM ONE, We Are One: Environmentalists of Color conference hosted by Justice Outside and Next 100 Coalition. She returned deeply inspired and brimming with inspiration and a renewed sense of purpose. Sherifa described the space as a family reunion with warm, welcoming people eager to collaborate and share resources. The conference used Deepa Iyer’s social change map to highlight each person’s instrumental role in the environmental movement. Sherifa shared that being among brilliant people of color in the environmental space allowed her to feel seen and empowered. She engaged in many exciting conversations and workshops and learned about the work of impressive organizations right in her Atlanta backyard. As she continues to plant her roots in this space, she intends to become an active participant in these organizations. Sherifa’s main takeaway is the reminder that we are all humans who care about the environment, and the more we collaborate, the stronger and more effective we are.

Daniel Student, Amy Jiang, MBA, and Cleveland Justis, MBA, PhD just returned from an inspiring few days at City Parks Alliance's Greater Greener conference in Seattle—and they say they’re feeling more motivated than ever! Being with such passionate and dedicated leaders in the city and urban parks sector was truly an honor, and it reinforced why we founded @Potrero Group in the first place. Our passion has always been to bridge partnerships between public, private, and government agencies to foster transformative change in parks and public lands. We firmly believe that systems change begins when we step out of our silos and come together to share knowledge and ideas. This conference perfectly reflected that belief, bringing together leaders from various regions and countries—shoutout to our new friends from Japan @ npo-birth.org!—each sharing invaluable insights and wisdom from their experiences. Learning from each other and seeing the diverse approaches toward common goals within our field was incredibly enriching. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello, share your stories, and engage in meaningful conversations. Your enthusiasm and dedication to making our cities and parks better for everyone are truly infectious. Let’s keep the momentum going! We invite you to stay connected with us and the fantastic network of professionals we’ve met. Together, we have the potential to significantly elevate our collective impact on parks and public lands across the world. Here’s to breaking down more barriers, sharing more knowledge, and making meaningful changes together. Cheers to a brighter and greener future.
