June 19th, 1865, marked a pivotal moment in our world’s history. Federal troops marched into Galveston, Texas, ensuring the freedom of more than 250,000 enslaved people. This event occurred two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, a long time to wait for freedom. As we commemorate Juneteenth, we strive to educate, empower, and elevate this history of freedom. Juneteenth is not only a symbol of freedom but a recognition of the lives that changed forever due to this moment in history. We recognize it as many names "Juneteenth", "Black Independence Day", "Jubilee Day", and "Freedom Day". However you choose to acknowledge it, remember there is much power behind the name. Happy Juneteenth!

I am deeply honored and humbled to have been recognized for my over 30 years of service on the board of NAMI Chicago. Serving as Board Chairman has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Receiving this service award from Alexa James MS, LCSW CEO of NAMI Chicago, was a truly special moment. Alexa's leadership and vision have transformed NAMI Chicago, changing the landscape of mental health in our community. I am profoundly grateful for her unwavering commitment. NAMI Chicago holds an extraordinary place in my heart, as my parents were among its founding members over 50 years ago. Our family’s journey with NAMI began when my brother became ill. The experience was incredibly challenging due to limited resources and the tremendous stigma associated with mental illness. My parents found solace and community in NAMI. During my tenure, I have had the privilege to work with many brave souls, wonderful board members, staff, and supporters of NAMI Chicago. Each success and victory is a testament to their dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment.
