“SUMMER HARD … It's a mantra in my life and a reminder that you don't get a lot of summers so take advantage of it!” - Jesse Itzler There are only a few magical weeks of summer left, so be a doer, prioritize those people that are important in your life and make some memories. When our oldest son, Christian, was a sophomore in high school, we started living less out of habit and more out of intention. Basically, I freaked out that he was a sophomore and we didn’t have much time left with him at home. You see, when I was first diagnosed, I didn’t think I would see him go to high school, now we only had three summers left before college. Life goes by so fast. We sat all four kids down and asked their favorite memories. It wasn’t the countless hours and games we spent on travel soccer, AAU, or hockey. It was getting thrown off the tube at the lake, fishing at the island, summer pool parties until 2 am with their friends and milkshakes for dinner. Each kid got to pick one thing to put on their summer bucket list: Christian - Bring friends to the lake Caleb - Ride dirt bikes and drink a whole case of Mountain Dew Cara - Visit Kings Island amusement park Lexi - Go to Trader’s World, a local flea market That summer forever changed our way of thinking. I have said this a million times, our PRG family is special. Our clients teach me so much about being where your feet are. Truly living in the moment. My friend, Laura Hinkle has been living with cancer for the last 8 years. She is so grateful to be alive. Her life mantra is “I get to.” As in today I felt well enough, I GET TO go to the grocery store. And I GET TO cook dinner. I checked in with her recently to ask what she “gets to do” this summer. Her response: “I felt well enough last night to GET TO stroll through Target with “Big Sexy” (her awesome husband) instead of doing curbside pick up. She went on to say. I love summer. I GET TO eat fresh sweet corn and peaches, and I am so thankful for the farmers who make it happen, especially, my favorite farmer, my husband. Have you ever taken the time to truly be grateful for all of the things you GET TO experience in life? When I was little, I remember my dad working overtime so we could all go to Disney World. We had to be in line before the park opened and we stayed until the fireworks because for gosh sake it was expensive and we were going to have fun. My dad was “summering hard” long before Jesse Itzler made it a thing. I am so thankful for an awesome childhood and this unforgettable trip to Disney World as a Little Orphan Annie-inspired curly haired 7 year old with my brother and sister. What are some of your favorite memories of summer? I know life can be heavy and hard at times, but remember to soak up the good stuff, love big, and really belly laugh! I challenge each of you to “summer hard.” Tonight, I am going to sit outside and watch the fireflies. I can’t wait to hear your summer stories Pink Ribbon Good Laura Lee-Hinkle
