  • Meet Amauri! Diagnosed at birth with sickle cell anemia, a condition in which a person's red blood cells are misshapen and rigid. He experienced his first sickle cell crisis—severe pain, swelling, fatigue and fever—when he was 7 months old. Being a Phoenix Children’s patient since the age of 2, Amauri had over 30 inpatient hospital stays and emergency department visits during the first six years of his life. Phoenix Children’s became a home away from home for him. His mom, Joanna, says, “Amauri did not have a typical childhood, but our family and Phoenix Children’s ensured he had the best childhood anyone could ask for. ” We're thrilled that Phoenix Children's has been awarded a grant from the CDC to support the Arizona Sickle Cell Data Collection Program, and is working with state-wide partners to improve care and support for SCD warriors like Amauri! Join us in raising awareness and spreading hope. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by SCD.

  • Meet this week’s #YoungHopeMaker, Evelyn—a vivacious, almost 8-year-old patient at Phoenix Children’s with a heart of gold and winning smile. Evelyn struggles with seasonal allergies and asthma, and she has endured a few surgeries and many emergency room visits. When she’s not fighting for her health, she’s fighting to cheer up kids like her. Because she knows how scary the hospital can be, Evelyn wanted to do something special for her fellow patients awaiting care at the hospital this week. She showed up an hour early for her own appointment—decked out in her Power Play superhero costume designed with sparkle, shine and loving hearts—and passed out more than 60 bags full of fun with the help of her robotic dog sidekick that goes by many names. The bags, featuring a fashionista on one side and sweet lady bugs and other creative designs on the other, contained slap bracelets, coloring pages and other items to help entertain patients and their families while they wait. Evelyn first donned her superhero suit during Phoenix Children’s 2024 Power Play, an event where Phoenix Children’s patients team up with fashion designers from Arizona State University. They then work together to bring our patients’ superhero personas to life as they strut the runway in true hero fashion. Thank you, Evelyn, for suiting up for your fellow patients and brightening their day!

  • Meet Tiffany, this week’s #YoungHopeMaker who’s charging full STEAM ahead. At 22, she's a recent summa cum laude graduate from Arizona State University, our 2023 Miss Arizona and former Miss Scottsdale. She also devotes her time championing both the sciences and arts—all while helping kids in need. Tiffany says she volunteered for her first Phoenix Children’s Foundation event at Castle and Coasters when she was 17, and seeing the patients participating and having a good time—despite what they faced—inspired Tiffany to do more. She then volunteered for a 1 Darn Cool School dance and found pure enjoyment watching a young, wheelchair-bound patient joyfully singing and dancing, while proudly displaying her face-painted tiger. That’s when Tiffany realized how her actions and donating time made such a positive impact. Those experiences, along with her own brief medical experience with Phoenix Children’s at 12, made quite an impression. She says she’s always amazed at how the staff go out of their way to make the hospital less scary. “I appreciate everything Phoenix Children’s does to alleviate the stress and nervousness that comes with being in a hospital.” Tiffany now volunteers for as many Phoenix Children’s events as time allows and will continue doing so—even after retiring her crown this summer. She particularly enjoys participating in all the telethons, and she even sang the National Anthem at our 2024 Concours in the Hills event. “That was an incredible experience,” Tiffany says. “I have never seen so many cars in one spot.” And during the holidays, this Young Hope Maker shines her volunteer light for kids and families in the hospital during Ignite Hope, our annual tradition. Tiffany says it’s humbling when she can reconnect with the families she’s met over the years. “You never forget a face when you meet someone with Phoenix Children’s. It just makes that much of an impact on you.” She adds that every small action may seem small to us, but it’s huge to kids in the hospital. “The greatest gift we can give is our time to help families in need.”
