Phoenix Children’s Receives $5 Million Gift from Vickie and Jerry Moyes

Jerry Moyes, founder and chairman and CEO emeritus of Swift Transportation, has made a $5 million philanthropic investment in Phoenix Children’s.

The gift from Moyes, a longtime resident of Phoenix’s West Valley, will support the health system’s expansion efforts in the area, which is growing at twice the national rate. With the West Valley’s pediatric population projected to increase from more than 400,000 today to nearly 500,000 by 2030, the need for pediatric health care services is greater than ever. To meet the growing demand, Phoenix Children’s is investing $254 million into several new facilities that will offer convenient options for West Valley children in need of urgent and emergency care, specialty care, outpatient surgical care and sports medicine.

“At Phoenix Children's, we are expanding primary care and improving access to specialty care and offering more emergency and urgent care throughout the Valley. We are in a season of exponential growth as we expand this year from one hospital to three. We engage with our communities and respond with innovative treatments, tools and technologies to help them on their path to better health,” says Jared T. Muenzer, MD, chief physician executive of Phoenix Children's and chief operating officer of Phoenix Children's Medical Group.

The new West Valley facilities include Phoenix Children’s Hospital – Arrowhead Campus. Key features of the Arrowhead facility will include a 24/7 pediatric emergency department, an outpatient surgery center, and a 45,000-square-foot multispecialty clinic, with expertise in orthopedics, neurology, cardiology, oncology, psychiatry and more. The campus, which is scheduled to open in July 2024, is expected to have over 76,000 visits in the first year.

During his nearly six decades in the West Valley, Moyes has been a pillar of philanthropic support for local charitable organizations, especially those serving children and families. When he learned that Phoenix Children’s was building Phoenix Children’s Hospital – Arrowhead Campus, he saw another opportunity to give back to the community.

“We wanted to do something that’s important and will benefit children and families for a long time,” Moyes says.

Steve Schnall, senior vice president and chief development officer of Phoenix Children’s Foundation, says that Moyes’ gift demonstrates the life-changing impact of philanthropy. “This gift will allow West Valley children to get the care they need close to home,” he says. “We extend our deepest gratitude to Jerry for his generous support, and we hope this will inspire others to invest in the health and well-being of Arizona children.
