What an extraordinary day for Boeing, United Launch Alliance (ULA), NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the United States of America! I am thrilled to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the incredible teams on the successful launch of Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams aboard the #Starliner spacecraft! This milestone achievement marks several significant milestones.
This mission stands as the first time we’ve launched crew on an Atlas V and only the sixth instance in NASA’s storied history where astronauts have flown on a new spacecraft designed to carry humans. Notably, Suni Williams is making history as the first female astronaut to pilot the maiden voyage of a crewed spacecraft.
As Butch and Suni embark on their journey to the International Space Station, we're reminded that this is a vital flight test. Over the coming week, they will demonstrate the end-to-end capabilities of the Starliner system, showcasing its readiness for future missions.
As a former test pilot myself, I share in their excitement and anticipation. Flight testing serves as the ultimate proving ground for spacecraft, allowing us to validate and refine their capabilities under real-world conditions. This mission presents opportunities for learning, and our commitment is to remain vigilant. Through rigorous testing and evaluation, we not only ensure the safety and reliability of our vehicles but also pave the way for future missions to push the boundaries.
Once certified, Starliner will enhance the utilization of the International Space Station, enabling expanded research opportunities and broader avenues for discovery. Furthermore, it will establish the United States as the only country with two unique human transportation systems, a testament to our nation’s leadership in space exploration.
Today, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Boeing and ULA for their remarkable achievement in launching Butch and Suni into space. At NASA, we eagerly anticipate the successes of this mission and the boundless possibilities that lie ahead.
