For his first eight months on this planet, Liam Kauffman knew only tubes, hospital rooms and ventilators. On Tuesday, everyone from hospital staff to family, friends and neighbors celebrated as he went home for the first time. At Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, members of his health care family dropped in to wish him well on the next stage in his journey. At his new address in Bendersville, Adams County, he and mom and dad Kristen Kuhn and Josh Kauffman met with a celebration from neighbors who were touched by the family’s plight. It was an outpouring of emotion as a child struggled to stay afloat amidst heart, respiratory, and lymphatic system ailments. It was a celebration of the happiest of milestones: Liam is finally home.

Our first-ever Storywalk at Detweiler Park alongside Dauphin County Parks and Recreation exceeded all expectations. Families had a fantastic time exploring the David's Field Loop Trail while getting a sneak peek at the book "Bear's Bicycle" by Laura Renauld. This initiative offers a wonderful opportunity for the entire family to come together and enjoy quality time outdoors. Not only does walking in nature alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression, but it also enhances memory and promotes a healthy heart.

Penn State Health’s Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Holy Spirit Medical Center and St. Joseph Medical Center now offer pulsed field ablation technology to patients with intermittent AFib, the most common type of heart arrhythmia. The FARAPULSE Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) System utilizes a catheter to target tissue linked to irregular heart rhythms precisely. By delivering rapid electrical impulses, patients can undergo a faster and safer procedure. https://bit.ly/3KUvmVR

As we observe Juneteenth, we take a moment to reflect on the impactful events arranged by The Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine. 💙 On Thursday, June 13, The Multicultural Business Employee Resource Group (BERG) presented a hybrid event at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. The event focused on the historical significance of Juneteenth, the strides made in its commemoration and the effect it has had on promoting health equity. ❤️ Last Saturday, June 15, a Juneteenth celebration took place at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg. Attendees listened to a reading and distribution of the book, “We Dream a World,” while also enjoying live music, an exciting scavenger hunt, a writing corner, and fun-filled stations for T-shirt and cookie decorating. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, marks the liberations of enslaved individuals in the U.S. on June 19, 1865. This day symbolizes freedom, equality, and the ongoing pursuit of social justice. Let us continue to educate, unite, and strive for a future that embraces everyone.

Meet Amy Harding, manager of utilization management at Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center who recently received the hospital’s 2024 Nursing Award for Excellence in Patient Advocacy and Experience. “Amy is quick to find, correct and resolve many registration discrepancies including verifying when patients may have exhausted their benefits,” said Alicia Runyeon, a financial counselor at St. Joseph Medical Center who nominated Amy. “Many patients have high deductibles and copays, or more commonly today, limited liability plans. She recognizes the burden a financial liability may pose to a patient and advocates for them, reaching out to a financial counselor to assist in applying for Medicaid or for our Financial Assistance Program.” Amy has been with St. Joseph Medical Center since 2021 and says that making sure patients are getting their hospital stay covered is very rewarding. “We help take care of our patients physically as well as financially. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Amy has lived in Berks County for 24 years.
