About us

We’re specialists in pre-seed and seed. The startups we back go far. Best-in-class founders do not come around every day. When they do, we jump at the opportunity to work together. Our approach is to work with just a small number of best-in-class founders so we can dig in and go deep.

🌟 Awesome evening yesterday at the Pear VC CoLab networking event! 🌟 I had a wonderful time connecting with both physicians and engineers in the healthcare innovation space. Shout out to the amazing team #6, Akhilesh Gupta, Jenelle Jindal, Sabrina Qi, and Daniela Velez! It was a blast to work with you on #healthcareaccess and I hope we can collaborate again in the future. I was also thrilled to run into some of my favorite clinical informaticists in the bay area, Matthew Sakumoto, Shivam Vedak, MD MBA, and Dong-han Yao, MD and have a chance to catch up and exchange ideas. Many thanks to Andrew Parambath, Vivien Ho, and Lipsa P. for hosting us in your beautiful space. Looking forward to the next event! #HealthcareInnovation #Collaboration #HealthTech #PearVC

I'm still thinking about last night's first Pear VC Care Colab...the Pear team healthcare team, Lipsa P. and Andrew Parambath, brought together 40+ clinicians and engineers to collaborate and pitch new solutions with the Pear's idea validation framework. We were lucky to have Dr. Jessica Mega give us inspirational welcome remarks on what she wish she knew when she joined Verily as a Co-Founder as a Cardiologist. I wanted to share a few of her inspirations which I think apply to any healthcare innovator whether at a startup or as a builder or clinician or any stakeholder in the system. 1. Start with a "Yes" mindset and focus on what is possible, rather than immediately thinking about reasons why something can't be done. Jessica shared that as technical individuals, it's very quick and easy to start thinking about reasons why something can't be possible, but it's our job to dream the possible, and together with these dyads, you're going to be able to see the world in a different way. Pessimists sound smart, but optimists make money, and optimists have good ideas. She reminds us to start with the idea of something could be possible. 2. Get out of your specialized lane and learn about other domains and perspectives to solve problems more effectively. Jessica reminds me us that we don't have to wear one hat. Both engineers and clinicians can come up with great ideas. 3. Become "bilingual" - learn to understand and communicate with people from different backgrounds and disciplines. We need to speak the same language in order to move forward and build together. Thank you Jessica for your wise words and your generosity to spend time with us and for being a Pear Healthcare Advisor! We hope exciting relationships bloom for this event and we continue to practice multi-disciplinary mindset to healthcare innovation. Our industry is not for the faint-hearted, but knowing the incredible builders and clinicians who are young and hungry to bring new technology to the forefront. We're going to be in good hands. Lucky to work with the amazing Pear healthcare team Lipsa P. and Andrew Parambath for working super hard to make this an impactful workshop, and grateful we can put this on while we're all the bay this summer! Shoutout to Hannah Berke, Rachael Ding, and Kaitlin Shavey for always making sure Pear Studio events are in good hands! #healthcareinnovation

We're so proud of Vanta for successfully closing a $150M Series C round led by Sequoia Capital and joined by so many other fantastic investors. We led Vanta's Seed round in 2018 and participated in the Series A and B rounds. It's been amazing to watch the progress that Christina Cacioppo and the entire team has made over the last two years -- we know the future is bright for Vanta and are cheering them on!

    CEO and cofounder at Vanta

Thrilled to announce we’ve raised $150mm Series C at a $2.45bn post valuation led by Sequoia Capital alongside all our existing investors – Y Combinator, CrowdStrike, Atlassian, HubSpot, Workday, and Craft Ventures – and new investors Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan. The terms on this round are exactly as we aim Vanta experiences to be: straightforward and clean. I couldn’t be more proud of how we’ve put customers first since the Series B two years ago. That daily work shows up in this round and in our output metrics: Vanta now has over 8000 customers, almost 2x as many as last year – we’re adding customers faster than ever before; our customer growth outside of the US is faster than inside; and Trust Management is starting to catch on. We didn’t need to raise this round – we had ⅔ of the Series B in the bank – but we chose to in order to better serve our customers: 🤖 We’re building AI and LLM-enabled features for our customers first, not for ourselves. Questionnaire Automation is actually really good – 80-90% answer approvals! – and Trust Center chat quite useful. Smart Recruiters saves 20 hours each week with a streamlined security review process. 💼 We are squarely displacing legacy GRC tools, which is quite impactful; there are lots of legacy workflows for software and automation to improve. Modern Health saves over 100 hours annually on security and compliance with Vanta. 🐣 We are still, and always aim to be, the best place for a nascent-but-ambitious startup to kickstart their security and compliance programs. incident.io built trust with huge enterprises when they were just three founders around a kitchen table because of the work they did in Vanta. Thank you to our customers, past and present, for supporting us and teaching us what’s most important to you. You improve us every single day. Thank you to Vanta’ns, past and present, for taking a bet on us with your time and careers. From our early days as “the llama company” to the slicker Trust Management Platform we’ve become, none of this would have happened without you. It remains the privilege of my career to hold a megaphone to your work.

Welcome Warren Shaeffer. So excited to have you join us!

Happy personal news: I’ve joined the Pear VC investing team as a Visiting Partner, focusing on pre-seed and seed-stage companies. Why Pear? A founder’s job is to stack the odds of success in their company’s favor, and I’m convinced that having Pear as an early investor is one of the best ways to do this. Pear stands out for many reasons, but here are a few: 1️⃣ People: Pear’s investment team is comprised mostly of founders, and brings unparalleled experience to the portfolio, including from early investments in world-changing companies like DoorDash, Gusto, Vanta, and many more. 2️⃣ Focus: Pear’s latest $432M fund is dedicated to pre-seed and seed investments, minimizing “signal risk” and maximizing early-stage support. 3️⃣ Resources: Pear offers dedicated in-house recruiting and go-to-market teams, as well as access to a stunning 30,000 sq. ft. SF office with community-building, expert-led workshops, and many other perks. I’m grateful to Pejman Nozad, Mar Hershenson, Ajay Kamat, Danielle Jing, and the entire Pear team for betting on me. You never forget your early believers! Founders, if you’re at the pre-seed stage, I highly encourage you to apply to PearX – Pear’s small-batch accelerator. The program offers $250K-$2M, a demo day where you pitch to thousands of top-tier investors (~90% of PearX companies raise additional funding), and many other benefits. Applications for the next cohort open August 15th. Lastly, thank you to my many supporters on this journey, both as a founder and an angel investor, including: Alex Benzer, Alexis Ohanian Sr., Andrew Blachman, Avidan Ross, Brett Berson, Christopher Lyons, Connie Chan, Connor Archbold, Erik Rannala, Ev Williams, Garry Tan, Hunter Walk, Kurt House, John Asalone, Lenny Rachitsky, Li Jin, Mark Suster, Matthew Mazzeo, Matt Munson, Phoebe Harrop, Robert Coneybeer, Rob Hayes, Sam Chaudhary, Sam Teller, Samantha Wong, Topher Conway, William Hsu, and Yan-David (Yanda) Erlich.

I was really honored to help the All Raise team in a small way this year as a volunteer contributor to the 2023 Annual Report. I have so much respect for the team that works tirelessly day in and day out to shift power and move the needle on representation in the VC and thus the tech ecosystem. Thank you Paige Hendrix Buckner, Dana M. Wildeboer, Angela P., Aileen Lee, and all of the others that dedicate so much time behind the scenes to this org. And with this report release, I have to shout out to my team at Pear. I'm really proud to work for a firm that really lives up to the All Raise goal of a vibrant & inclusive VC ecosystem and is always trying to "walk the walk" here. Pear is female-led (shout out to the best Mar Hershenson), we have a team that is over 50% female, and we have so many badass female check writers (looking at you Vivien Ho, Kathleen Estreich, Danielle Jing, Aparna Sinha). Over 45% of Pear-backed companies have a female founder, a number that is sadly not the norm in our industry. There is so much more to do, but progress is progress and it's important to celebrate it. It's been really cool to be a part of this All Raise report, and I'm excited to keep chipping away at these goals.

This year has been monumental for All Raise, and our CEO Paige Hendrix Buckner is eager to share our collective progress! Here are some takeaways: 1️⃣ We’re trending in the right direction and outpacing the expected time to achieve our goals. The proportion of women decision-makers in VC firms has nearly doubled to 17.4%! (For firms with $50M AUM or greater) 2️⃣ Diversity leads to triumph! Research confirms that diverse teams yield better returns. As noted by Harvard Business Review, venture capital firms that increased their proportion of female partner hires by 10% saw, on average, a 1.5% spike in overall fund returns each year and had 9.7% more profitable exits. 3️⃣ Male allyship is essential. Our community survey reveals that 98% of respondents acknowledge the positive impact of male allies in hiring, funding, and mentorship endeavors. As a collective, we can rewire the industry from the inside. We've made substantial progress, but we still have much work ahead. We are deeply grateful to our team, volunteers, and Board members for their steadfast commitment. Orby’s agent based Generative Process Automation (GPA) platform, which uses the industry’s first Large Action Model (LAM), makes automation's implementation and maintenance very efficient, delivering real ROI for businesses.
