Santa Barbara-based Kate Farms was started with the goal of founders Richard and Michelle Laver to help their young daughter, Kate, who was born with cerebral palsy. As a child, she was failing to thrive because she could not tolerate any of the available tube-feeding formulas. So, the Laver’s started their own company in 2011 and developed their own formula — one that has stood the test of time. Now, 13 years later, Kate Farms’ plant-based nutrition products aren’t just helping Kate, they are helping people all over the world — and soon they might be helping even more. https://lnkd.in/g2RFYSUY

After graduating from the University of Southern California, Steve Hayes knew he wanted to be in some form of sales work. After all, it was something he had been doing since he was a kid. “If you asked my dad, he would say, ‘Steve always had a campaign,'” Hayes told the Business Times June 19. “He would say I was always selling, always putting something together on reasons to do or not to do something so I guess I liked getting in front of people and convincing them.” https://lnkd.in/g2Xhn-fT

A Carpinteria man was sentenced June 18 to 16 years and eight months in state prison for an investment scheme that targeted elderly victims across the state, including members of his own church. Brett Lovett, 53, who previously had been convicted in a jury trial of 29 felony counts, was sentenced by Santa Barbara County Superior Court Judge Pauline Maxwell. Santa Barbara County District Attorney John Savrnoch said in a press release that, “white collar crimes are particularly damaging to the elderly and the vulnerable, who often cannot financially recover from the loss of their life savings.” https://lnkd.in/gPpT-bak

In 2022, as a prelude to invading Ukraine, Russia hacked Viasat’s satellite internet equipment to disrupt communications, create confusion, and prevent a coordinated response to its attacks. The first true “space war” strike, the assault on the global communications firm’s apparatus was a wake-up call for the need for outer space cybersecurity, says a new report from Cal Poly’s Ethics + Emerging Sciences Group, released June 17. Patrick Lin, the study’s principal investigator and director of the Ethics + Emerging Sciences Group, told the Business Times that the point of the report to a large degree is to raise awareness about space cybersecurity. https://lnkd.in/g8ezkkTG
