There's A Difference

About us

Froerer Farms is a family business by choice. We operate with integrity and honor, by word, by handshake or by contract. We do what we say we will. Our goal is to continue the legacy started in 1954 by Owen Froerer. Our families’ deep connection to the land, our relationship with our customers, and commitment to provide them with the finest produce available is what drives us 365 days a year. To us, agriculture is about food, not commodities. When food becomes a commodity a farmer gets paid based on the amount of produce they grow, rather than by its quality and storability. Owyhee Produce profits by what gets directly to consumers, we care about how it tastes, how long you can store it before you cook it, how nutritious it is for you, while also being concerned with the impact on the environment from our growing practices. With American pride, we grow American produce - for that reason we strive to have exceptional quality products, we are listening to our customers and are eager to give them what they ask for. We are truly committed to developing and sustaining an authentic connection with the folks who eat our produce. We want you to know how we grow it, the care and attention given to its quality, and our commitment to ensuring we provide you with the best onions and asparagus possible. We are excited to offer our unique officially licensed collegiate products! Owyhee Produce is now an elite Year-Round onion grower and shipper. This means consistent quality, supply, and competitive freight rates, 365 days a year. We are changing the way you buy onions! We have been growing, packing, and shipping top-quality yellow, red and white onions for more than five decades. Our satisfied customers consider us the onion experts!

Green Gone White! Our asparagus experiment is a success! We blocked the sun & look what happened! Regular green asparagus gets its color from chlorophyll, which develops when exposed to sunlight. In our experiment, the box blocked the sunlight, preventing chlorophyll production. This results in the asparagus spears staying white and tender. White asparagus is more expensive and is called “white gold” because growing it requires more labor. Farmers need to mound soil around the asparagus or use special covers to keep out the sun. The white asparagus season is much shorter than green asparagus because it takes constant effort to keep the spears from reaching the sunlight. And white asparagus is considered a delicacy due to its milder flavor and rarity. Compared to the US, white asparagus holds a more prominent role in Europe's culinary scene, particularly in Germany for a few reasons: Tradition and Taste: European cultures, especially Germany, have a long tradition of enjoying white asparagus. The milder flavor and unique texture are considered a delicacy. Climate: Europe's cooler climate compared to some parts of the US is more conducive to growing white asparagus. The cooler temperatures help slow down growth, allowing for thicker and more tender spears. Consumer Preference: In Europe, there's a higher demand for white asparagus compared to the US. This drives more farmers to specialize in its production, creating a larger market and cultural significance. #farming101 #farmer #farmlife #produce

Cool Asparagus Mystery Box! Plants, like asparagus, use a pigment called chlorophyll to capture sunlight and convert it into energy through a process called photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is what gives most plants their green color. But if there’s no sun there’s no chlorophyll? Green or White? Follow and like to see the results.  Is the Asparagus coming completely white or green, comment what you think. #asparagus #farming101 #farmlife #agriculture

Biodegradable black mulch & white covers ripen watermelons faster. Black mulch offers several advantages for our crops. Because the mulch is black, light is not transmitted through the plastic, so weeds will not grow under the material. Soil temperature increases by 3-5 degrees F under the mulch at 2 to 6 inches of soil depth. This is the area of greatest root growth early in the season. By creating a barrier between the soil and the sun, black mulch helps reduce moisture evaporation from the soil. This is especially beneficial during hot summer months, keeping the crops hydrated with less frequent watering. #farming101 #farmer #farmlife #produce #food

WE USE LASERS TO HAVE BEAUTIFUL BIG CROPS! Unlike herbicides, which can harm crops along with weeds, the LaserWeeder can help improve crop yields using cameras and AI to target only weeds with concentrated laser beams. This minimizes damage to desirable plants and allows them to grow freely. By eliminating weeds that compete for resources, laser weeding allows onion plants to focus their energy on growth. This translates to stronger, healthier plants with the potential for larger bulbs. Weeds can stress onion plants, hindering their growth and bulb development. Laser weeding minimizes this stress, allowing onions to thrive and potentially reach their full-size potential. Consistent weed control across the field, achieved by laser weeding, can lead to more uniform onion sizes and appearance. This can be especially important for growers aiming for a high-quality product. Carbon Robotics #onions101 #farming #farm #farmer #produce #agriculture #laserweeder

Pests are a problem for Organic or Conventional growers and we need to use pesticides. Onion thrips are tiny, sap-sucking insects that wreak havoc on onions and other vegetables. Thrips are smaller than a grain of rice, about 1/16th of an inch long, with slender bodies ranging from yellow to brown and they pierce leaves and suck out the juices,  damaging the plant and leaving silvery streaks or white patches. Heavy infestations can stunt plant growth, cause leaves to yellow and die, and even reduce crop yields. While fond of onions, they'll also munch on garlic, leeks, and other veggies and flowers. #farming101 #farmer #farming #Produce #agriculture

White And Green Asparagus Differences! Green asparagus sunbathes, making chlorophyll for its green color. White asparagus stays underground, skipping the sun and staying pale. Same plant, sunshine creates a vibrant difference! Green asparagus reigns supreme in the USA, most people here seek out the familiar green spears. In contrast, white asparagus enjoys equal popularity in Europe. . . . . . . . #farming101 #asparagus #farmer #farmlife #agriculture #instagood #instareels #reels #reelsinstagram #instadaily
