Dezeen released a story detailing the completion of OVERLAND project Marie Selby Botanical Gardens following the activation of the 2,158 solar panels on the rooftop of the Living Energy Access Facility (LEAF), which make this place the world's first net-positive energy botanical garden. "The new facility at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens stands as a testament to sustainable, regenerative architecture, setting a benchmark for botanical gardens everywhere,” said Overland Partners Associate Principal John Byrd AIA LEED AP LFA. "This landmark project elevates not only Selby Gardens, but Sarasota itself beyond a prime beach destination to a beacon of leadership in sustainable design worldwide." This week the Waco City Council unanimously approved a Strategic Plan for downtown’s redevelopment. I was thrilled to bring the placemaking perspective to this blue-chip team led by Hunt Companies, Inc, along with consultants OVERLAND Partners, Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Elizabeth Fauerso, Hunden Partners, Gensler, and Walker Partners Engineers | Surveyors. This plan aims to boost economic activity and improve the quality of life, addressing a large swath of downtown destroyed by a tornado in the 1950s that was never redeveloped. The project also will capture the new momentum in Waco spurred by the Magnolia phenomenon, unleashed by local entrepreneurs Chip and Joanna Gaines. Key elements contemplated in this massive revitalization effort include public spaces and waterfronts, new mixed-use districts, a new City Hall, a convention center, a minor league ballpark, and a performing arts complex. This whole project started late last year when the city issued an RFQ for “MASTER DEVELOPER FOR DOWNTOWN WACO MIXED-USE PROJECTS.” Although I interviewed with one team that did not win the project, I was thrilled to be plucked out of the crowd to join the winning team, Hunt Companies. Design work will proceed at a speedy pace to meet a deadline for a groundbreaking in June 2025. The project is expected to take at least 20 years. "It is so much bigger than anything we've ever done before, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't do it," Councilwoman Andrea J. What a successful Bike for Breakfast event we had earlier this month! With a mission to promote sustainable methods of transportation in San Antonio, the event promoted alternative modes including biking, walking, co-riding and bussing to work. The University of Texas at San Antonio's Department of Sustainability brought their Mobile Bike Repair Van to the event and REI provided a repair mechanic! We also had USGBC South Texas onsite speaking to their mission and upcoming events. Our Bike for Breakfast event was done in tandem with Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization's Bike to Work Day! Thanks to everyone that came out -- we had a blast!

One80 Solar has finished installing the 1 Acre Solar Array at Selby Gardens LEAF (Living Energy Access Facility). This will provide more than 115% of the power needs for the new buildings in OVERLAND's Master Plan design, with the excess power feeding existing historical structures -- reducing Marie Selby Botanical Gardens carbon footprint and helping the organization become #netpositive. The LEAF also includes a stormwater filtration system that will collect and cleanse over 1,000,000 gallons of water per year onsite which will help protect the Sarasota Bay Ecosystem. It is one of the first Living Communities in the world seeking certification from the International Living Future Institute. Video by One80 Solar.
