We must help nurses care for patients better. Imagine a solution that records patient info across shifts, shares it with doctors, checks medicines for safety, and shows patient history quickly. This saves time for patient care. Nurses equipped with real-time data are at the forefront. We must de-clunk EHRs!

Healthcare needs AI … because it needs the human touch.

This paper explores the application of generative AI and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) for summarizing and extracting key clinical information from electronic health records (EHR) to manage malnutrition in aged care facilities. 1️⃣ The study utilized the Llama 2 model with zero-shot prompting to generate structured summaries of nutritional status from unstructured EHR data, achieving an accuracy of 93.25%. 2️⃣ Incorporating RAG with the generative model improved the summarization accuracy to 99.25%, highlighting its effectiveness in handling unstructured data by providing additional context. 3️⃣ The AI model demonstrated 90% accuracy in identifying malnutrition risk factors from nursing notes, although the addition of RAG did not further enhance this task. 4️⃣ The study identified hallucination issues, where the model generated plausible but incorrect information when explicit details were not provided in the notes. RAG helped mitigate but not completely eliminate these errors. 5️⃣ The research demonstrated the feasibility of using open-source generative AI models like Llama 2 for clinical NLP tasks, offering a more adaptable and efficient solution than traditional methods requiring extensive training data. ✍🏻 Mohammad Alkhalaf, Ping Yu, Mengyang Yin, Chao Deng. Applying generative AI with retrieval augmented generation to summarize and extract key clinical information from electronic health records. Journal of Biomedical Informatics. Elsevier 2024. Excited to unveil LionBird’s Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) cheat sheet! 🚀 While patient & payer preferences are moving more care to the home, Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs), with a footprint of 18,700 active SNFs in the US housing 1.7 million certified beds, continue to play a crucial role in the care continuum. Nonetheless, with a transient workforce, non-tech savvy residents and basic gaps in IT connectivity selling technology to SNFs presents unique challenges. Alongside Michael Skaff we’ve documented the right insider questions to determine if a startup is a good fit for this channel, including - 🎯 Messaging Strategy: Evaluate how your offering stands out amidst SNFs' priorities. 🔗 Deployment: Overcome hurdles related to EHR & 3rd party system integrations. 🔄 Workflow: Plan for organizational changes associated with adopting new technologies in the SNF setting. 💼 ROI: Mapping clinical & financial results to SNF priorities. & much more! Human scribes have transformed medical documentation since their widespread adoption in the 2010s. Studies show that physicians using scribes increase their productivity by 20-30%, seeing an average of 4-5 more patients per day. Doctors save 2-3 hours daily on paperwork, allowing more time for patient care. This shift has led to a 20% improvement in patient satisfaction scores and a 90% reduction in billing delinquencies. AI scribes are now emerging as the next step in this evolution. These systems can work 24/7, potentially tripling the coverage of human scribes. They maintain 99% consistency in documentation quality, compared to the 85-90% achieved by well-trained human scribes. Advanced AI can process medical conversations in real-time, with accuracy rates approaching 95% for common medical terminologies. While initial development costs may reach millions, projections suggest AI scribes could offer 30-40% cost savings over human scribes within 5 years of implementation. However, challenges remain. The technology is still being refined, with current error rates around 5-10% for complex medical scenarios. Healthcare organizations must ensure these systems comply with HIPAA and other regulations, a process that can take 6-12 months. Surveys indicate that about 60% of healthcare providers are open to AI scribe adoption, while 40% express reservations. Looking ahead, experts predict that by 2030, 70% of healthcare facilities will use a hybrid model, combining human expertise with AI efficiency. This approach aims to optimize documentation processes, potentially reducing overall administrative costs by 25% and improving patient care quality metrics by 15-20%.
