Cofounder at Karat- helping creators w money

Top engineering creator William Osman just hosted a massively successful science fair called Open Sauce - with over 20K attendees. It was gloriously amazing. It also was an incredible amount of work. It cost $2M and wasn't profitable despite William putting in a ton of his time and his own money. William shares the real story behind Open Sauce on the latest Karat Financial pod at https://lnkd.in/giuhMCfU! My takeaways: 1. Open Sauce comes from a place of passion. William started it because he missed the sense of wonderment he felt attending Maker Faire in the early days or making his first few videos on YouTube. William's channel has grown tremendously - to the point where he has to care about views now. Open Sauce is his way of getting to do something purely for fun - and to give back to the maker community that inspired him. 2. It's okay to start with something sh*tty - and then improve it. Open Sauce wasn't supposed to be profitable in its early years - events generally aren't. The important thing was William proved out the demand for it. He made a video a few days before - declaring that as humans, we're all sh*tty and make sh*tty things- and that's okay. Because it's way better to just make something first. 3. As a creator - if you want to put together really meaningful things- you have to scale as a leader and work with a team. William repeatedly mentioned thanks for his incredible team that helped make Open Sauce happen - including Ian Dokie his COO. Over 100 people helped put together the event. As a pure creator, you can work by yourself to put out cool videos. But to grow beyond, you have to learn to recruit & manage others too. What do you think?

🎉 exciting news! 🎉 I'm thrilled to share that Open Sauce has been featured in Forbes! the article highlights exhibits, creators attending, and the innovative work we're doing together to make a difference in the STEM creator/maker space in our second year. It's a true testament to the dedication, passion, and expertise of each and every member of our team. 🙌 "now in its second year, Open Sauce has more than doubled in size since its wildly popular debut in 2023. This year's event is expected to draw over 20,000 attendees to witness mind-blowing displays like a jet engine-powered go-kart, a nuclear fusor, a 16-foot fully-functioning keyboard, and even a robot that can solve a Rubik's cube faster than humanly possible." https://lnkd.in/gSiX_zDh William Osman Ian Dokie Emma Parsons David Seelos Dana Block Jennifer St. Clair
