The Community College Practitioner Relations ad hoc committee in The Council for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC) recently created a frequently asked questions (FAQ) guide for community college professionals and university-based graduate students. The document, which was written by CSCC members Bob Barber, Xiaodan Hu, and Carrie Kisker, was designed to assist individuals who are interested in conducting research at community colleges. Consider assisting our senior research assistant Jewel Bourne with her dissertation study if you meet the below criteria!
Friends and Colleagues! I’m thrilled to share that my dissertation study is now underway and I'm looking for participants. My dissertation study focuses on the experiences of Black women navigating California community colleges and their transfer experiences. I'm looking to chat with Black women community college attendees who are currently attending or have attended a California community college within the last 10 years, who are aged 18 years or older. Those who meet the criteria or are interested in learning more, are invited to complete the participant screening survey: https://lnkd.in/gmrB6E43 or by reaching out to me directly at jbourne2@illinois.edu. Sharing with your networks and anyone you feel meets the criteria is much appreciated. Thank you for your support and can't wait to start chatting with our students and sharing this much needed area of focus.

Materials needed for college courses, such as textbooks, have outpaced the rate of inflation for the last four decades (Popken, 2015), making the adoption of open educational resources (OER) a viable way to save on postsecondary education costs for students. The OER project by OCCRL examined the integration of open educational resources in Illinois community college courses to assess the need and utility of this free material. As this project closes out, we invite you to discover the recently published OER syllabus at https://lnkd.in/gNYUibTC.

As many students and parents know, the release of the redesigned Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) has been fraught with technical glitches and delays, creating havoc nationwide. Stacy Bennett, Ph.D., a senior research associate at OCCRL, recently talked with Illinois research editor Sharita Forrest about the FAFSA redesign and the issues surrounding it. “While there is still time to apply by the June 30 deadline," Dr. Bennett said, “it may be too late for some students. Many colleges and universities have April and early May deadlines for students to accept their admissions offer.” Read the interview at https://lnkd.in/ggZpuUz6.

An Illinois bill that would enable community colleges to confer certain baccalaureate degrees could be a game-changer for nontraditional students and other underserved populations, according to Lorenzo Baber, director of the Office of Community College Research and Leadership at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. "It is an opportunity to elevate pathways to the bachelor’s degree through community colleges and populations that have been underserved," Dr. Baber says in the piece by the #ILLINOIS News Bureau.

You couldn't ask for more of an advocate for community colleges than Dr. Sarah L. Rodriguez, who grew up in tiny Eustace, Texas, attended Trinity Valley Community College, and went on to do big things. "I literally grew up at the community college," Rodriguez said in the latest OCCRL Community College Spotlight. "Attending a community college made me believe in the power of these institutions to change lives, families, and whole communities." Read the Q&A with Dr. Rodriguez at https://lnkd.in/gBfgm5Fd.
