We shared fresh insights from the Elevating Equitable Value research series, highlighting the economic benefits of a college degree and exploring critical questions on the equitable delivery of postsecondary value. It was also an honor to present alongside Sandra Barone from Trellis Strategies, who participated in this research series, and to hear from Matea and Jennifer from the College Board on their robust and influential analysis of trends in college value. This recent article by Inside Higher Ed discusses a study by the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP) revealing that colleges giving preference to legacy applicants tend to admit fewer Black, Latino, and low-income students. The analysis of federal enrollment data from the 2021–22 and 2022–23 academic years shows that selective institutions considering alumni ties have a predominantly “whiter and wealthier” student population than those that don’t. To support more institutions in scaling evidence-based activities to boost college completion, we submitted recommendations to strengthen the Postsecondary Student Success Grant Program. Key recommendations include supporting a tiered grant structure to fund diverse interventions, prioritizing data use for continuous improvement, and encouraging a broader range of successful student support strategies beyond college-to-career pathways. Did you know that 2.1 million students attended institutions that consider legacy status in admissions decisions in the 2021-2022 academic year? The practice, prevalent even at public institutions, disproportionately benefits the children of college-educated families.
