Just over a year ago, Ochsner Health, in partnership with Xavier University of Louisiana, announced our plans for a new historically black college and university (HBCU) medical school in Louisiana to help address physician shortages and give more career opportunities to underrepresented students, helping to improve health outcomes for patients and community members across our region. Today, on April 29, we shared our continued progress in launching the transformational Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine (XOCOM). Through the establishment of XOCOM, Xavier and Ochsner aspire to redefine the landscape of medicine by training new physicians who authentically mirror the communities they serve. Slated to be the only HBCU medical school in the Gulf South when it opens, XOCOM expands opportunities for New Orleans’ downtown area as part of the BioDistrict, a development district growing biosciences and the local economy. As XOCOM advances healthcare equity and expands the physician workforce in the Gulf South, the medical school will also help the BioDistrict lead the region in healthcare excellence and promote inclusive, equitable job growth. At the momentous XOCOM signing celebration, Xavier and Ochsner officials proudly announced that Leonardo Seoane M.D., F.A.C.P., executive vice president and chief academic officer of Ochsner Health, will serve as the new HBCU medical school’s founding dean.  Xavier University of Louisiana will seek approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, which is expected to take about three years, followed by recruitment. XOCOM aims to seat 50 students in the first class, and the medical school will continue to grow as it develops. Thank you to all who have made XOCOM possible, including the Xavier University of Louisiana Board of Trustees, the Ochsner Health Board of Directors, and local and state officials. 🚁 Celebrating 40 years of Ochsner Flight Care 🚁 Ochsner has been a leader in healthcare for the Gulf South, both on the ground and in the air. In 1954, Ochsner announced plans to build a 70-by-70-foot heliport at the rear of Ochsner Foundation Hospital, partnering with Petroleum Bell-Helicopter. This made Ochsner one of the first hospitals with its own heliport, ensuring faster emergency medical care for offshore oil rig workers. Fast-forward to 1984, and the Ochsner Flight Care team was born. For the past 40 years, this 24/7 emergency and critical care transport service has been a lifeline for critically ill neonatal, pediatric, high-risk obstetric and adult patients. The Flight Care team has 21 members, including Flight Care nurse Michelle Kline, RN, who has been with the team for almost nine years. Michelle said the most rewarding part of her job is helping someone during the worst moment of their life and making a difference. When asked if a moment in her career sticks out to her, Michelle said, “Walking in a room with my partner to transport a patient in critical condition and the family saying ‘We’re so glad you are here. We knew everything would be OK when we saw you two walk in the room.’” On average, each Flight Care team member supports a minimum of 100 patients every year. To support these patients, Michelle said the Flight Care team undergoes extensive training, including quarterly airway training, aircraft safety, and training on safely escaping from submerged aircraft situations, along with training simulations at Ochsner’s training center. Because of this rigorous, high level of training, patients can expect the best quality of care when they are with the Ochsner Flight Care team. Join us in celebrating four decades of dedication, innovation and compassionate care. Thank you to the Ochsner Flight Care team members for all that you do for our patients and community! 🩺💙 The photo gallery includes photos throughout the history of Ochsner Flight Care and Ochsner’s original heliport.
