About us

The OC Health Care Agency (HCA) is a regional provider, charged with protecting and promoting individual, family and community health through coordination of public and private sector resources. Many of the HCA's services are preventive in nature and therefore are not readily apparent to the public. Some examples include food protection, monitoring the quality of ocean water, mental health services, alcohol and drug use services, communicable disease control, public health field nursing and public health clinics. Our ultimate client is the entire Orange County population. While providing direct services to individual clients or patients, the HCA's primary focus is to protect and promote the health and safety of the community as a whole. As we know, Orange County is continuing to grow and become more diverse. Over the next decade, teens and older adults will become Orange County's fastest growing population sub-groups. The Health Care Agency is continually planning in anticipation of these changes so that our services meet the needs of the community.

The OC Board of Supervisors proclaimed June as Silicosis Awareness Month to promote awareness of this incurable lung disease affecting stone fabrication workers. Cases are steadily increasing in Orange County causing concern for the health of workers who inhale silica dust in the process of cutting and finishing countertops. Symptoms include cough and shortness of breath, can lead to need for supplement oxygen and/or lung transplantation and can cause death. The best solution is prevention. Cal/OSHA published Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) on Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) to protect workers who cut, grind, or polishing of artificial and natural stone containing more than 10% crystalline silica. The OC Health Care Agency asks local fabrication shops to be compliant with Cal/OSHA standards and local workers and health providers to learn more by reviewing CDPH Health Advisory.
