Northwestern University Knight Lab is a community of designers, developers, students, and educators working on experiments designed to push journalism into new spaces. The Lab provides an open, collaborative environment for interdisciplinary exploration and conversation, where students and professionals learn together and from one another. In short, we’re energized by hard questions worth answering; we believe in the process as much as the product. You may know us from our award-winning storytelling tools such as TimelineJS and StoryMapJS, or from our support of Census Reporter, a website designed to make Census data easier, or from our amazing alumni who have gone out to do great things in media, technology, and design.

Almost every Thursday evening of my first year at Northwestern, I have met up with a handful of fellow students to participate in the NU Data Journalism Collective's weekly "tea times." We would talk about interesting data sets, coding, complications in our current projects, drink tea, do chemistry homework - pretty much whatever came to mind. I learned so much from my fellow students and could not be more grateful for their efforts to teach me how to use RStudio or what "machine learning" really means. Fun fact - these tea times didn't exist last year. The Data Journalism Collective didn't either! The entire group was started in the fall after Joe Germuska of The Knight Lab sent out an open call to any students interested in starting a data journalism-focused student org. I and a handful of other absolutely amazing students (Ava Mandoli , Daniel Gross, Dina Drogin, and Owen Handelman) responded, and put our heads together to create something I am incredibly proud to be a part of. I am far from a data journalism expert. But thanks to the support and genius of my fellow students, I was able to take a random dataset about food access in the US and turn it into a map - it's not the prettiest thing in the world, but I think it's cool! Case study: The Invisible Institute compiled a database of complaints against police officers and use of force reports in cities outside of Chicago across Illinois. The initial database has 7,000 records from the City of Champaign, Illinois and Urbana, Illinois and is geared toward both the public and journalists. The nonprofit worked with local journalists to both build the database and report stories based on the records obtained. Case study: Investigate West's data-driven reporting project started with a question about one judge who himself had been involved in some domestic violence situations.
