Last fall, the Biden-Harris Administration assigned NTIA a critical task: Assess the risks and benefits of open-source AI systems, or “open weight” models for broad use. Today we released our findings. Recognizing the importance of open systems, our report recommends no government-mandated restrictions on the wide availability of powerful AI systems’ key components at this point, but calls for the U.S. government to actively monitor AI risks. This “monitor but not mandate” approach promotes innovation and access while also positioning the U.S. to respond quickly to potential and future risks that may arise. We also call for the U.S. to develop an ongoing program to collect, evaluate, and act on evidence of risks to promote both safety and broad access to this technology. https://lnkd.in/ejzM4qpk #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #Technology #Innovation

Deadline approaching! The National Telecommunications and Information Administration launched a Request for Comment this spring on how U.S. government policies can support the development of next-generation 6G technology. Comments are due on Wednesday, August 21. As the wireless industry plans for the development of 6G, the U.S. has already joined like-minded partners in establishing joint principles to shape the future of this technology. NTIA recognizes that secure and reliable communications services are vital to U.S. and international economic competitiveness and security. NTIA’s Request for Comment seeks input to inform future U.S. government engagement in support of 6G development and deployment. The RFC asks questions about how to enable 6G success, research and development, and #6G safety, security and environmental concerns. We hope to see your comments: https://lnkd.in/eRM_sBPs

Last week the FCC and NTIA #coordinated on an event for our summer interns that highlighted the ways we collaborate on a variety of policy issues. Sarah Morris Nga Ly, PMP and I took a look back at our mapping coordination leading into the BEAD allocation and shared examples of current broadband projects that use the Broadband Funding Map (fundingmap.fcc.gov) data to ensure federal deployment dollars are not funding overlapping projects. Thanks to Karen Hanson Desiree Hanssen Mikelle Morra Bonan and others on the planning team for this event and highlighting the importance of coordination for our next generation of Telecom policy leaders.
