Nicole Blocker says we don’t often choose the role of caregiver— it chooses us. But ultimately, it’s all about how we rise to the challenge. This is what she did when emergency spinal surgery resulted in her mother being diagnosed with a physical disability. This #DisabilityPrideMonth, Nicole shares how she’s using her experiences to empower others. Nicole joined the #VerizonADVANCE (Advocates for Disability, Accessibility, Neurodiversity and Caregiver Empowerment) employee resource group so that she had a space to be an ally and share her story to help others. One of my favorite parts about my role at Verizon is the opportunity to work cross-functionally and network with others who are not part of my direct team. Sometimes, I even make lasting friendships with people I meet through work, such as my friend Sudha Karmegam, PMP®. Sudha Karmegam, PMP® works in the Customer Experience team in an Operations role, and I work in Design. We get to sync up daily for our work deliverables, but we also stay connected outside these touchpoints, celebrating all of our wins - both professionally and personally! We both seek opportunities to contribute at Verizon, are very open to progress and growth, and sign up for Verizon-led activities as frequently as possible, such as (volunteerism? trainings? in-person meetings or office days?). Despite Sudha Karmegam, PMP® and I having many differences, such as our gender, religious faith, and physical functioning status, we always find common ground in our similarities. Sudha has been such a positive influence in my life, and I love to see her positivity shine through. I’m inspired by her dedication, compassion, and willingness to help! We’re mentors to one another, and I’m forever grateful to Sudha for the light she’s brought into numerous elements of my life! Thank you, Sudha Karmegam, PMP® !
