Architecture Enriching and Sustaining Life
About us
Newman Architects is a collaborative design studio based in New Haven, Connecticut, and led by five principals: A. Brooks Fischer, AIA; José Hernández, AIA, NOMA, LEED GA; Melinda Agron, AIA, NOMA, LEED GA; Peter Newman, Assoc. AIA; and Richard Munday, AIA. Together, our staff of thirty forms a knowledge-driven architectural practice with a vision to work collaboratively to shape space and expand possibilities. From our new office space near the New Haven Green, Newman provides comprehensive architectural services from community engagement, programming, and conceptual design through construction administration and post-occupancy evaluation for higher education, commercial, K-12, library, civic and community projects. Our work has been acknowledged for its excellence in design, management, sustainability, and team collaboration with over 150 awards and—most importantly—longstanding relationships with and ongoing endorsement from our clients. Herbert Newman founded our firm in 1964 with a commitment to creating functional, nurturing environments that have a sense of belonging to the communities they serve. In working towards our contemporary mission to create places of enduring value that serve, sustain, and enrich life, we are driven by six core values that define our approach to our work and to our interactions with each other: capability, curiosity, integrity, belonging, agility, and care. Our work balances fundamental design principles that respond to fundamental human needs with the flexibility to respond to evolving social and technological demands. Our aim is to create lasting architecture with clear patterns of organization, straightforward yet sensitive geometries, plentiful access to natural light, shared paths and places for community, universal accessibility, and environmental, social, and economic sustainability. These simple ideas reflect the aspiration that all our work foster connection between people and place.

Newman Architects is pleased to invite you for our next Newman Speaker Series, in which we explore the range of pressing issues facing architectural practice today. On Wednesday, June 5th, Nora Rizzo, Ethical Materials Director from the Grace Farms Foundation, will join us to explore the role of ethical sourcing in sustainable design and ask us to consider: Is Your Building Ethically Sourced as well as Sustainably Designed? The Design for Freedom movement is raising awareness about the pervasiveness of forced and child labor in the building materials supply chain. The built environment continues to be heavily reliant on modern slavery. We will explore the risks of this humanitarian crisis and highlight ways you can take action toward creating more transparent supply chains. We will look at the intersection of sustainability, material health, and social equity as we learn about the tools and resources available to use in advocating for a more humane built environment. 1 AIA HSW LU Wednesday, June 5th, 4:00 - 6:00 pm 265 Church Street, 15th Floor New Haven, CT 06515 The talk will run from 4:30 - 5:30 pm with social time before and after. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Space is limited, so please register: https://lnkd.in/eu9_D3RK

We are honored that the Walter P. Carter / Lois T. Murray Elementary / Middle Schools in Baltimore, Maryland, is a Silver winner of the Brick Industry Association's 2023 Brick in Architecture awards. The use of brick, along with a low-rise massing and casual rhythm of ribbon windows, reflects the school's context of Baltimore rowhouses. Contrasting light and dark brick brings a modern character to a traditional school building material, highlighted with a pattern of shimmering manganese that shifts color throughout the day.
