“You can retire anytime.” That’s what Kathy Bruner’s financial advisor said to her last October. That statement washed over Kathy and it took some time to settle in. “It made me nervous,” she recalls. “I wasn’t ready.” She spent the winter and spring thinking and praying about it, and a decision came into focus. “July 31 popped into my head and simply didn’t go away,” Bruner says, who works as a Purchasing senior analyst for Perioperative Services. She will retire on July 31 after a 45-year career at Nebraska Medicine. She plans to join her husband, Todd, who is already retired, on his weekly adventures with their 3-year-old grandson, Mikey. “This has been my home for the last 45 years,” she says. “I take a lot of pride in my work. I’ve had incredible mentors along the way willing to share their knowledge with me and it’s made me better. I feel very privileged to be part of that.” “Kathy has a wealth of knowledge but what I appreciate most about her is that she cares about the clinicians and patients who use the supplies she helps procure,” says Bryan Kenney, director, Business Operations. In addition to spending time with their grandchildren, the Kathy and Todd plan to travel to South Dakota and Siesta Key, Florida, in the coming months, as well as catching up with old friends and gardening. “I want to catch up on reading a stack of books that have been staring at me,” she says. “I am bringing Kathy with me for my next car purchase as she is a master negotiator, says supervisor Jennifer Anderson, business manager, Perioperative and Procedural Services. “She is always thinking of what is best for the organization and ‘no’ isn’t in a word she easily accepts from vendors when it comes to money. While we are sad to see her go, our team is excited to celebrate her amazing professional journey over the past 45 years!” “I have loved working here,” she says. “It’s emotional. For 45 years, this has been my home away from home. But I’m excited for my new journey.”

"Here I am ten years later, and I feel like a kid." For the first time in a decade, blues icon Walter Trout returned to Omaha. Walter received a life-saving liver transplant at Nebraska Medical Center in 2014. After performing in the Playing with Fire concert series, Walter and his family visited the med center, to thank the transplant team in person. After shaking hands and exchanging hugs and stories with his doctors, nurses and transplant coordinators, Walter explained why it was so important to come back and show how he's thriving. "I’m the living proof here. And I’m just one of the many, many living proof examples that have come out of this amazing place." Congratulations to Walter on this ten-year milestone!

Here's a story with heart! Arno and Betty Neben are long-time Nebraska Medical Center volunteers. Betty works with other volunteers to at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Millard to sew the pillows received by heart patients at the med center. The heart pillow kits are purchased through funds from the Nebraska Medicine Guild. The kits are then sent to the church for the group to stuff and sew them together. Arno thought about that when he was admitted last month for heart failure. “Three of the heart valves were shut down and the fourth one was clogged,” says Arno, who would go on to have quadruple bypass surgery on June 28. “When I learned I was needing heart surgery, I thought, ‘Hey, I think I’m getting a heart pillow.’” The surgery was a success, and now Arno has his own heart pillow as a keepsake. “This pillow made it from our living room through manufacturing and inventory at the church to the hospital and now back to me,” he says. Thank you to Arno and Betty and all of our volunteers for everything you do for others! #NebraskaMed #NebraskaMedicine #seriousmedicineextraordinarycare #togetherextraordinary
