DEFEND - DEVELOP - DECOLONIZE

About us

We are unapologetically, unabashedly NDN. United like never before, we rise together—arm in arm—to equip all Indigenous Peoples with the tools needed to become architects of their future. Through a holistic approach to infrastructure, funding, advocacy, consulting, and philanthropy we are fostering a world of justice and equity for all people and the planet. -- DEFEND OUR PEOPLE, COMMUNITIES, AND NATIONS Negative resource extraction pollutes our water, destroys our land, contributes to climate change, and violates the rights of our people. Organizing our communities, making our voices heard, and utilizing a wide variety of tactics is imperative in shifting the political and financial systems that impact all aspects of life. -- DEVELOP REGENERATIVE AND SUSTAINABLE INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES We need to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We are doing this through regenerative community development, renewable energy investments and social enterprise development. -- DECOLONIZE OUR MINDS, COMMUNITIES, AND SOVEREIGN NATIONS The decolonization of our communities and people is directly related to our ability to prosper. Through the revitalization of our Indigenous ceremonies, culture, languages and life ways we will continue to strengthen our identity and break free from the oppressive systems that disconnect us from achieving the healing, growth and connection to spirit that is integral for us as Indigenous people.

On July 17, 2024 a public meeting was held in Custer, SD providing an opportunity for community members to voice their opposition in the U.S. Forest Service’s approval for company F3 Gold to begin its Newark Exploration Drilling Project in the Black Hills National Forest. It was a monumental moment as our brother and Local Organizer at NDN Collective, Taylor Gunhammer, was appointed as a member of the newly formed community board opposing the Newark project. The community members of Custer made a direct and intentional ask to have an Indigenous person on the board, noting the leadership of Indigenous people in fights like these. Taylors presence on this board will have a lasting impact as he continues to advocate for the protection of our shared environment for future generations. “Through our shared opposition to F3 Gold’s exploratory drilling project, local Native and non-Native communities realized we have similar ideals about how this land should be cared for – and that the only way for us to protect ourselves from toxic mining is to band together as a united force,” said Taylor Gunhammer, NDN Collective Organizer. “What we are teaching and doing here transcends the classroom because students take what they’re learning home and teach their families,” Mary Bowman said. Mary is the head of school or Unci of the Oceti Sakowin Community Academy in Rapid City, SD. OSCA provides an Indigenized education for Lakota students by Lakota teachers. Mary has countless stories of the impact the Academy has had on her community. Parents and grandparents often tell her that their students take home the traditional teachings they learn at school and share them with their families. OSCA was developed around four core values: wačhaŋtognake (generosity), wóksape (wisdom), wóohitike (bravery), and wówačhiŋtȟaŋka (fortitude). These principles were adopted as a means to change the narrative of Indigenous people that is taught to students in most US history classes across the country. The often inaccurate and racist lessons are based on a white perspective and glorify the impacts of colonization. Mary’s goal for Indigenous students is to give them a strong cultural understanding of their history and people; to correct the story and provide students with a foundation to understand what really happened to their people. • “The narrative is that the colonizers came and saved us. That’s not true. We had everything we needed. We were a strong, thriving Nation before colonization. It’s important for non-Native people to know that too. That narrative needs to change.”
