"To help keep people safe on the mountain and during other outdoor activities."

About us

As the leading authority of on-mountain safety, The National Ski Patrol (NSP) is dedicated to serving the public and outdoor recreation industry by providing education and accreditation to emergency care and safety service providers. NSP is made up of more than 32,000 members serving over 650 patrols, including alpine, nordic, and auxiliary patrollers. Our members work on behalf of local ski and snowboard areas to improve the overall experience for outdoor enthusiasts. National Ski Patrol (NSP) was established in 1938 and is a member-driven professional organization. We strive to provide best-in-class training and education programs for emergency rescuers serving the outdoor recreation community. NSP supports its members through accredited education and training in leadership, outdoor emergency care, safety programs and transportation services. The emergence of new snow sports like snowboarding, tubing, and snow-skating has introduced new equipment and terrain requiring new safety and rescue techniques and emergency care methods to be developed and taught. In addition, greater access to the backcountry has brought new training and regimens for NSP members as well.

NSP is pleased to announce that Greg Fortin has been named the Avalanche National Program Director. Greg is the owner of a winter guiding service, operating in Glacier National Park for the past 20 years. He is based out of Columbia Falls, Montana. He has been a member of the National Ski Patrol since 2002 and held many positions along the way. Prior to this, he was involved with multiple search and rescue teams from Maine to Colorado and Utah. Greg is an avalanche educator through National Ski Patrol, and a certified Interpretive Guide. Through his involvement with NSP and Flathead Nordic Back Country Patrol, he has had the opportunity to be a Hasty Team Leader, Avalanche Advisor, Northern Division Nordic Advisor and an educator to help bring along the next generation of patrollers. "As the season moves into mid winter, we reflect with a heavy heart on four avalanche fatalities in the month of January. This brings to mind the importance of avalanche education and the safety found in a good rescue plan. As winter enthusiasts, we must first learn the risks of our activities and how to identify Avalanche terrain. NSP is the longest running Avalanche education program in the United States and can help provide the knowledge to keep you safe. Enjoy this winter season, have a rescue plan, recreate responsibly and stay safe." - Greg Fortin, Avalanche National Program Director.

National Ski Patrol Safety Tip We must remember that patroller mental health is just as crucial as their physical preparedness. Today, let's take a moment to recognize and prioritize Patroller Psychological Safety. 🌟 Promote safety and wellness by creating a safety wellness team and hosting safety meetings at the start of every shift.  🌟 Look for ways of promoting patroller wellness and creating a supportive, open, communicative culture without prejudice.  🌟 Leverage resources available to you on the nsp.org patroller wellness page and build relationships with local support resources. Let's work together to ensure our patrollers not only protect the skiing and riding public, but also feel protected themselves. #PatrollerPsychologicalSafety #SkiSafety #MentalHealthMatters #NationalSafetyAwarenessMonth #SkiSafe #NSP #SafetyFirstOnSlopes #AdventureResponsibly #NationalSkiPatrol #SkiPatrol

Honoring Our Veterans on Veteran's Day 🇺🇸 On this Veterans Day, we would like to take a moment to honor and express our deepest gratitude to all the men and women who have served our country. Today, we pay special tribute to the legendary 10th Mountain Division. Formed during World War II, this specialized division was trained to fight in mountainous and arctic conditions. The 10th Mountain Division was instrumental in developing modern skiing techniques, ski resorts, and the foundation for the National Ski Patrol. Many veterans of the 10th Mountain Division returned from the war to build, manage, or instruct at ski resorts, forever changing the landscape of winter sports in America. 🙏 Thank You 🙏 Your sacrifices are not forgotten. To all veterans who have served, and to those who continue to serve, we salute you. If you see a veteran on the slopes or anywhere else today, take a moment to say thank you. It's the least we can do for those who have given so much. #VeteransDay #10thMountainDivision #NationalSkiPatrol #ThankAVeteran
