An NIA-funded study found that food insecurity in families with adults over age 60 has doubled over the past 20 years and affects almost 25% of these families. The results found that Black, Hispanic, and low-income families were disproportionately affected by chronic and recurring food insecurity. Apply for the 2024-2025 NIH Climate and Health Scholars Program by July 15, 2024! NIA hopes to find a Climate and Health Scholar that will help to build the institute’s capacity in climate change and health. The program provides opportunities for scientists from outside the U.S. government, focused on climate change and health, to work with NIH staff on projects that increase climate and health knowledge and research capacity. NIA is proud to support the 31st Annual Summer Training Course in Experimental Aging Research. The application deadline for this year’s course is Monday, July 8, 2024. This course is an excellent career development opportunity for junior faculty and advanced fellows with at least two years of postdoctoral experience. It is also open to senior scientists who are just entering the field of aging research and want to gain more experience. This year, the course will be held at the Healthy Aging and Longevity Institute (HALO) at the University of Washington in Seattle from September 8-13, 2024. Less than 2% of the human genome comprises genes that code for proteins. The remaining 98% includes DNA segments that help direct the activity of those genes. These regulatory sequences can have a powerful impact on our health, but their activities and functions in the human brain and their role in mental health remain poorly understood. To learn more about where, how, and when genetic risk contributes to mental health conditions, NIH-funded researchers mapped gene-regulating networks in the human brain. With the help of artificial intelligence, researchers could eventually spot warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease through electronic health records. This may be possible by training machine learning algorithms to spot risks before identifying the underlying genetic activity and biochemical pathways that elevate a person's risk. This two-step approach might help researchers and caretakers better understand the risks associated with each person's case of Alzheimer's. National Institute on Aging (NIA) reposted this
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is caused by the loss of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and eventually death. By analyzing the genetic makeup of donated brain tissue from people who had #ALS, NINDS-funded researchers have found the culprit behind neuron death—a set of risk genes. High levels of these genes in a unique type of neuron, called the Betz cell, may trigger a chain reaction that leads to widespread neuron and glial cell dysfunction. Because Betz cells are the first to go in ALS, the findings may inform new treatment strategies to slow and even stop ALS progression. https://go.nih.gov/qrpIXjo
