NIMBioS proudly hosted the 2024 Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education (EDGE) Summer Program, supporting women and gender nonconforming mathematicians from diverse backgrounds. With a legacy spanning over 25 years, EDGE has been a wonderful advocate for diversity in mathematics. We're thrilled to share these photos from the banquet aboard the Volunteer Princess, where students had the opportunity to listen to guest speaker Dr. Raquel Lopez, a mathematics professor at Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix, Arizona, and to enjoy an evening of dinner, drinks, and a sunset cruise. #NIMBioS #EDGESummerProgram #WomenInMath #WomenInSTEM

We're thrilled to announce that the National Institute for Modeling Biological Systems (NIMBioS) is hosting the 2024 Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education (EDGE) Summer Program! EDGE empowers women and gender nonconforming mathematicians from diverse backgrounds to excel in their PhD journeys. For over 25 years, EDGE has been a hub for diversity in mathematics. Beginning in June, participants will engage in workshops covering algebra, analysis, measure theory, and computational topics. These courses are designed to prepare students for the rigor of graduate studies and qualifying exams. Collaborative problem-solving sessions, colloquia, and presentations encourage participation and exciting discussions. Members of our community are helping create a great experience for students, including these folks who are giving talks throughout the month: NIMBioS Assistant Director of Grant Development, Dr. Anne M. Ho, Director of Data Sciences and AI, Dr. Belinda Akpa, UTK’s Chancellor's Professor of Mathematics, Dr. Suzanne Lenhart, and UTK’s Associate Head for Math Majors and Minors, Dr. Joan Lind. Happening later in June, The EDGE Summer Symposium, a two-day event, features research talks, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, bringing together participants, mentors, and members of the mathematics community. At NIMBioS, we're committed to supporting initiatives like EDGE that promote diversity and inclusivity in STEM. We are so excited to host this program and meet all of the participants! Stay tuned for updates throughout the month of June. #EDGEsummer2024 #DiversityInSTEM #WomenInMath #UTK #NIMBioS #WomeninSTEM

#ThrowbackThursday With our Adventures in STEM Camp right around the corner, we want to shine a light on the Ijams field trip day from last year! To wrap up the fun week of #science, #technology, #engineering and #math activities, campers had the opportunity to explore Ijams Nature Center, a nonprofit nature center inspiring people of all ages through education and outdoor activities. We are excited and proud to collaborate again with ISSE and CURENT on this camp! We look forward to the next Adventures in STEM Camp, coming up in just 3 months. One of the fun events that we host at the National Institute for Modeling Biological Systems (NIMBioS) is an informal, virtual sharing series called Morsels from Numbers and Nature. We've had a range of awesome talks so far, but one of my favorites was when Dr. William Godsoe discussed "Intuitive explanations of diversity: lessons from the Barbie movie." Check out the recording here: https://lnkd.in/eqgQtiVK And join us for our next morsel tomorrow (Thursday 4/18) at 12pm ET! https://lnkd.in/ea6SqyWC #nimbios
