When special education students at Zachary High School in Zachary, La., were interested in showing broiler chickens, Zachary High FFA members stepped up to make this opportunity possible. As a result, FFA members created the AG Buddy program, which has been active since 2018. Through this program, special education students are paired with FFA members who help them learn how to care for and show broiler chickens. In addition to developing relationships with peers, these students prepare a speech that showcases their knowledge about their projects. When FFA members expressed interest in selling handmade goods during the sale hours, their advisor, Tara Poe, saw it as a perfect opportunity for them to begin ownership and entrepreneurship supervised agricultural experience (SAE) projects. In the first year, member Annabella Bengie took the initiative to sell homemade dog treats. However, the warm greenhouse environment posed a challenge as her products melted. Recognizing the need for a more suitable venue, Poe applied for a Kentucky FFA Foundation Ag Innovation Grant to transform a run-down shed on the school grounds into a business space for her students. Upon receiving the grant, the chapter used the funds to lay a new floor, add wall paneling to make the space food-safe, and install refrigerators. A doorbell was also added to allow customers to signal students in the ag classroom for assistance with their purchases. The newly renovated shed, now named the Ag Marketplace, is located just steps from the classroom and has become an entrepreneurship hub for the chapter. It offers students a dedicated space to run their businesses and develop their entrepreneurial skills.
