"Newsom signed into law on July 15 Assembly Bill 1955 — aka the SAFETY Act — which bars public-school districts from requiring staff to notify parents if their children change their preferred pronouns or gender identities. California is the first state to pass such a law... Danielle King, a senior youth policy counsel at National Center for Lesbian Rights, said the law also provides resources for parents and ensures retaliation protection for teachers who refuse to forcibly “out” students. The law is critical for transgender, gender-nonconforming and nonbinary students, King said, because of the rate of suicide ideation and attempts among transgender youth. According to the Trevor Project’s 2023 national survey on LGBTQ youth aged 13-24, 56% of transgender young men, 48% of transgender young women, 48% of nonbinary young people and 44% of gender-questioning youth contemplated suicide last year. King told The Examiner that “the criticisms of the SAFETY Act are based on misinformation about the new law.” “Its main purpose is to ensure that [transgender, gender-nonconforming and nonbinary] students are treated equally and that their privacy is respected so that they can thrive in school, just as their peers,” she said." https://lnkd.in/eXaFZsA2 #AB1955 #SAFETYAct #LGBTQyouth #forcedouting #education NCLR – National Center for Lesbian Rights

In 2023, we saw a number of forced outing school polices get passed in California. NCLR Senior Youth Policy Counsel, Danielle (Danny) King, Esq. joined a coalition of advocates from across California to take action! Last week, after a year of work, we finally won when AB 1955: The SAFETY Act was signed into law in California by Governor Newsom. The SAFETY Act will protect California students against forced outing in schools, provide resources for parents, and ensure retaliation protection for teachers who refuse to forcibly out students. Thanks to Assemblymember Christopher Ward, the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus, and Equality California for championing the bill!

We are so proud of our own Bryanna A. Jenkins, Esq.’s leadership and brilliance. Presenting at the National Bar Association’s 99th Annual Convention. It isn’t easy being a trailblazer but she moves with joy and grace, paving the way for future Black LGBTQ attorneys.

Yesterday, federal district court judge Robert Hinkle denied the State of Florida’s request to stay a June 11 decision blocking enforcement of Florida’s law banning health care for transgender minors and restricting it for transgender adults. Our Legal Director Shannon Minter on the stay: “We are pleased the court will continue to enforce this important decision, which correctly found that Florida’s ban on lifesaving medical care for transgender youth and adults was based on bias, not fact. Like other similar laws around the country, Florida’s ban was passed impulsively, without any attempt to genuinely understand this area of health care or the best interests of transgender youth and their families. The State of Florida continues to ignore the facts and make unsupported and, in some cases, outlandish claims. We are grateful to Judge Hinkle for calling these state officials to task for their misrepresentations.” Read the full press release: https://lnkd.in/gy6DVEjU
