#FactFriday: Coal produces 70% of the world's steel. Steel is crucial to modern life. It supports infrastructure, transport, and even the packaging that preserves our food. Steel is also vital for renewable energy. Each wind turbine requires 170 tonnes of coking coal and 300 tonnes of iron ore. By 2050, steel use will increase by 20%, making coal essential for expanding infrastructure to support an additional 2.5 billion people moving to cities. Coal will remain vital to global steel production, even as recycling and electric hydrogen production methods increase.
